And I need your help! I play metal, first off, so I want a "metal" tone (truth be told, I have no idea what this is, I've never payed much attention to bass tone before besides basic EQ'ing... I suppose what I'm really trying to say is I want there to a bit of growl behind my tone).

Anyways, I probably came off as a complete idiot there, so let's move on...

I'm looking to spend, hopefully, $1000ish on a head and cab. I play a 5 stringer with the low B downtuned to an A, so I definetely need the cab to have good response with the low notes. As far as the head goes, I'm not against solid state at all (running a Crate BX100... I think, lulz... right now and I've got no complaints, especially for the price I paid), so either that or tube is fine. Weight isn't really an issue.

So... GO GO GO!

:chug:

P.S. I eventually plan on upping this to a full stack, so take that into consideration regarding the head, especially

P.S.S. However, if this is an unrealistic expectation, please explain why and what I'm looking at

Kustom Groove head/ Avatar cab sounds like a good plan. Maybe go with the 4x10 because you'll probably want mids for metal.

Looked into that head, definetely looks like a good buy. I'll have to find a store in the city that sells Kustom Groove stuff so I can try it out (oddly enough, why isn't it in musiciansfriend or music123?). Avatar cabs I'm having trouble finding stuff on, tbh. I took a look at their website, and the B410 Neo looks like a really good price (1000 watt cab for $400? :D). Anywhere I can find more info on them? And, if I would end up having to purchase it through their website, would they ship to Canada?

Never mind on that last one, I found a dealer in Winnipeg which sells Avatar cabs.

Try out some SWR or G-K aswell as the usual Ampeg. Peavey is another great company as well as Yorkville, I recently played one and I was blown away by its responsive speaker.

I would go an Avatar cab and a GK from rmc audio.

Personally, I would have a look into some Peavey gear. Had a masterclass with the bassist from Sikth recently, and his peavey stack sounded absolutely immense

All right, well, I've kinda decided upon Avatar cabs, seeing as there's nothing else even remotely close to their value.

The G-K 1001RB-II 700/50W looks good, but could someone possibly explain how it gives seperate power output to the tweeter and the woofer?

yorkville is amazing i have an XS-400H and the onboard tube pre-amps OD is amazing =x

and if you're playing a 5er you might be better served getting an avatar B212 over a B410 it will articulate the low notes better just a thought

Well, from what I've heard, the 4x10 has great low response anyways but a much punchier mid-range... which is what I need for metal.

I'll eventually add on a 212, but I'd rather be able to cut through the mix than just have people feel the bass... which they probably wouldn't even with a 212 going. Need a proper sub for that.

add a 212 will actualy hurt you in the long run. trust me i had the same rig. the 410 can handle the head by its self. the 212 wil cut down your out put on the amp. you'd be better off with a 210 + 115 or 118 both @ 8 ohms and bridge them. you still wouldn't get cab efficiency. plus the cabs are heavy as all hell.

either buy 1 cab or two smaller ones

The GK biamp system only works with GK cabinets. If you're using some else's cabinet it won't work. It will work just like a conventional amp/cab setup (which is exactly how I run my GK 2001RB into my Schroeder 410R). Just make sure you don't use the 4-pin speakon that's included with GK heads with a normal cabinet. You'll want to use a conventional 2-pin speakon wired for +1 (positive) -1 (negative).

As for Avatar cabinets. Don't go by the typical 410/212 generalizations. The current Neo410 and Neo212 are voiced pretty much opposite of how you've described. The Neo410 has a very scooped midrange and more extended bottom end. The Neo212 have a more pronounced midrange but not as much low end extension. If I was buying one purely for use with a metal band, I'd get the 212.
