I am going to Guitar Center tonight to pick out a bass. Please recommend me a bass that is in the $300-1100 price range, is not too heavy, and doesn't have a neck dive (neck heavy). Oh, and there must be enough space to do double thumping (Wooten's technique). I mean that the control knobs must not be in the way. Those are just about the only requirements. I am willing to try any bass that you recommend.

thanks.

btb 1000 series. best playability imo, and most diverse tone imo.

only thing i dont like about them is the 35inch scale. i feel like the strings fight me when i play. you can counter that with lighter guage strings, but then you loose tone with light strings so...

Since you want room to DT a lot, I'm going to suggest a PJ, one because of the tone and two because it leaves a lot of room between the pickup and fingerboard.

The Yamaha BB414, i haven't ever played tis bass, but have heard good things about its tone, I can't vouch on the weight and neck dive.

and I would also suggest the ATK, I don't remember it having any noticably back neck dive

EDIT: For some reason I thought your price range was 300-500, I dunno whats wrong with me.

Lakland Skyline... Fantastic quality.

I played a lakland Daryl Jones a couple weeks ago that was just fantastic. Look into these. You can now find them at Sam Ash and GC.

What exactly is being referred to when you say 35" scale? What is the average for a bass?

Most basses have either a 34" or 35" scale (distance between nut and bridge). The 35" scale is less common because it is larger and means that there is more space between each fret.

I personally like the 35" scales.

How many strings are you looking to get on your bass?

I think he should go with five.

Personally, I might get a new bass too. I was thinking a thunderbird (epi). Any reasons to stay away from that bass?

You could pick up a Warwick Corvette for that price

An MM Stingray is always good when it comes to slapping. It wont be $1100, but you might be able to find a used one or talk the guy down to $1100.

I also recommend trying out the house brand called Ocean or Laguna or something of te like. They are really nice basses, I think.

If you're looking for a 5er, I'd probably recommend either of those two in 5-string versions.

Warwick Corvette

Get it.

The slap tone is unbelievable and the space between strings can be adjusted through the bridge.

Best bass I've ever owned, of course I've never owned a thumb 6

I am still thinking about what to get. Does anyone have any experience with Music Man Stingrays? Opinions?
I heard someone say that the G and D strings sound a lot quiter than the A and the E strings because of the pickup. Is that true? Then again, that came from a person who didn't like the bass.

Thats only with some 2 Band EQ's. Stringrays are great basses, try a sterling out while your at it.

So it wouldn't be a problem with these basses, right?:

Also, do you think DTing might be a problem on either the StingRay or the Sterling?

From what I have heard the 3 band EQ's have no problems.

As for DT'ing you don't really need that much room. I took the volume knob off my bongo so I could do it cleaner. Thats pretty much the worst that can happen.

buy 10 squire P basses or a Warwick

warwicks tend to be neck heavy so that rules them out for this guy....though some arn't that bad
i would go with either a MIA Fender or Lakland...they are both top quality and very versatile basses.

Holy crap a $800 price range? That's some huge differences man, tighten that range up unless your looking something really specific expensive or something specific cheap. It's going to be hard to really hard to choose since there are just so many basses that are good in that range...

What I meant was that I am willing to spend up to $1100. If a really nice bass costs $500, I am willing to try it.
