So as i was playing around on my bass just now, i realized that the 8th fret of my A string has a high pitched buzzing sound. I know it's not fret buzz because i've raised my action and it has all gone away. This is a much higher pitched buzz that only happens on the 8th fret and it doesnt happen when i slap/pop it either.

It doesn't show up on recordings when i DI into the soundcard so i dont really have a way to let you listen to the noise.

Any ideas as to what this could be and how to fix it because it's extremely annoying. Thanks

If you raised the action and it went away, then it probably is fret-buzz. You might have a slightly raised 9th fret on the A string.

Where does the buzz come from? Check if it's from the fret, bridge or the nut.

when i said it went away i mean the fret buzz went away. This is not fret buz...not normal fret buzz anyway.

It's definitely not from the bridge. and im fairly confident it's from the fret but when i put my ear to it i can hear it from both the fret and the nut.

It seems to be coming from lower down the neck because when i pluck the string and then lightly put my finger on, say, the 5th fret, it stops.

Then it's fret buzz from one of the frets below the fretted note. I used to get it when the slots in the nut were worn down. If it bothers you that much, you can raise the string in the nut and it should sort it out.

how do you do that?

I bought a blank nut and filed some dust off it and glued it into the slots, then filed the slots to where I wanted them.

Or, my trick, is to take a tiny piece of paper, fold it up, and slide it under the string at the nut.

I personally use the superglue and nut shaving method. Did it on one of my basses three years ago, still holdin strong.

So before buying anything new i figured i would try the paper thing. So i got a piece of paper folded it up put it in...then while i was tuning the string back, it fell out and i lost it...so in my search for the paper i found a drumstick shaving. (thank you drums!)

I put that in and now all is well:)...Thanks guys.
