i've had this old silvertone 4-string banjo in my basement for as logn as i can remember. i decided today for some reason that i wanted to learn (have played guitar for several years).
a) is silvertone is a decent banjo? theres no model or year or anything
b) do i need to replace the skin?
c)is 4 string strictly jazzy? i want it for more folk-oriented playing.

a) Sorry, no.
b) The head is most likely made of plastic. Regardless, unless there is a hole in it, there is no need to replace it. It may need to be tightened, but not replaced.
c) No.

finally, thank you. thats pretty much what i was expecting, i've taken it into a music store to have a few things fixed up, haven't heard back yet.

I think I'm gonna get a banjo. I can play that intro to dueling banjos which is worth the whole price of a banjo.
