I've decided that instead of putting all my money into buying a brand new fender american p that I'm gonna do up my old Daion Performer bass. It's a P-bass, short scale, 4 string, passive pickups, pretty much a standard P bass, including a home defret job.
What I'm looking to do with it is put on a new neck, bridge, new pickups and electronics, the whole speil pretty much. I also wanna take it to a luthier(sp?) and get a jazz pickup hole routed out.
Just got a couple questions before I do any of this though:

Would it be okay to put a full scale neck onto a short scale bass? I imagine the only problem would be neck dive, but I can deal with that.
Do DiMarzio make good P/J pickups? I'm quite a fan of their guitar pickups, but I know nothing about bass pickups in general. If you suggest a pickup, please don't reccomend Seymour Duncan's though, not a fan of those.
I've heard nothing but good things about those "Bad *** II" bridges, worth it? Do they do a string through body option?

I haven't got a price limit just yet, I'd like to keep it lowish (less than $1000AUD) this is a "when I've got some money, I'm gonna..." thing so far lol. So, whatever suggestions would be appreciated.

i dont know about bass pickups, but i know you can't put a longer scale neck on a short scale guitar.

the intonation would be off, because the bridge would be in the wrong place. (relative to the neck)

Ah bugger lol. Thanks for that anyways man. I'm gonna have to check a couple places and see if they do short scale necks then.

ye i wouldnt be too sure about the neck switching. for one, the neck might not fit in the pocket. two, the intonation might not work out. as for badass bridges.. i really think this forum hypes them up more than they deserve. i would go for a hipshot, its got the string through option your looking for, plus they look much better

1. Intonation would be off due to the bridge being in the wrong spot. You could relocate the bridge relative to the 12th fret of the new neck and make it work though... provided there's enough body to adjust the bridge that far back.

2. I love DiMarzio pickups for bass. My main bass uses a set of DiMarzio Model J's.

3. Bridges... I'm a big advocate of the theory that if your bridge will hold intonation, allows for sufficient adjustment to establish a good string action and intonation you will not see any advantage in replacing the bridge. If you do decide to replace it, I would suggest something from Hipshot over something from Leo Quann (manufacturer of the BA bridges). If you do decide to go with a BA bridge I would suggest one of theit pre-slotted bridges over the standard models.
