If you liked Times New Viking, you should check out Factums. The two bands are label mates, and I actually think Factums are a bit better. Though both bands are awesome.

LCD Soundsystem's newest was probably my favorite record of the year.

I think I may be the only one who liked Voxtrot's album, but I'm alright with that.

15. Six Organs of Admittance - Shelter From the Ash

Songs

1. Burial - Archangel
2. Panda Bear - Bros.
3. Radiohead - Weird Fishes/Arpeggi
4. Animal Collective - Fireworks
5. Bill Callahan - Diamond Dancer
6. UGK - International Player's Anthem

8. Mary Weiss - Don't Come Back
9. The National - Squalor Victoria

12. Battles - Tonto
13. Nick Lowe - Hope For Us All
14. Angels of Light - Goodbye Mary Lou
15. Mavis Staples - My Own Eyes

Or something. I should probably get back and reevaluate some of these rap albums I've got sitting around. Mostly, I couldn't get it up for rap this year. The only stuff I was interested in is the fun stuff. Devin the Dude and UGK get on the list on account of their consistency when I needed something nice to drive to. I can't really justify Sean Price over Pharoahe Monch, but it is what it is, son.

The only stuff I've left on my hard drive to listen to are Deer Tick and Stars of the Lid. I'm not really itching to listen to either though, honestly. Kudos to Shelter From the Ash, Robert Wyatt, The Postmarks, every Numero comp released this year that I got my hands on, Grizzly Bear EP, Old Time Relijun and a couple dozen other songs scattered around on a couple dozen albums. So on so forth.

Pretty good list DMD, but seriously that Gravenhurst album is so dull. Also the Interpol one I thought was a let down for the most part.

My favorites...

Animal Collective - Strawberry Jam
Future of the Left - Curses
The National - Boxer
Okkervil River - The Stage Names
Justice - I can't do the synmbol.
Matthew Dear - Asa Breed (how is this not on more lists)
Battles - Mirrored
Radiohead - In Rainbows

Scout Niblett - This Fool Can Die Now

arcade fire - neon bible

the 'i'm not there' soundtrack
lcd soundsystem - sound of silver
justice - (cross)
grinderman
the good, the bad and the queen
iron & wine - the shepherd's dog
the national - boxer
panda bear - person pitch

biggest surprises of the year:

philippe cohen solal: solal presents the moonshine sessions. i was kind of expecting this to suck and be basically french dude trendifies country the way gotan trendified tango, french style. but it's so much better than gotan, which was pretty formulaic and repetitive. really beautiful, delicate album (though it does have some country kitch touches, like crickets)

ween - la cucaracha: a few good songs but overall left me pretty indifferent.

rufus wainwright - release the stars: also surprisingly mediocre.

I had high expectations for that album and I unfortunately feel the same way. Nothing really stands out amongst the whole album, it really sounds like a half-assed version of Quebec. For the record, "Shamemaker" and "The Fruit Man" are just dreadful.
