so got tired of the neck finish on my squier p bass slowing me down, decided to go satin. never played a satined neck, but think it would be great. the neck was also a little thick, so this was a good way to slim it down a bit:). i already sanded the finish off, smoothed the neck out againg, and appyed to layers of satin. i put a light coat on, the next morning, i quicky sanded it with newspapers, and appied another coat, i am now giving it the weekend before any more work is done. i am using Olymic clear satin gloss.i got a small splotch or 2 on the fret bord. it is rosewood. what is the best way to get it of safely? i now now in the future to apply masking tape to the fretboard. what are the next steps to use until it is finished?

when I refinid my neck, I used tung oil. But I had already scalloped the fretboard so iused it on the rosewood as well. Tung oil ftw.

...sanded it with newspapers...
I really, REALLY have a problem with this. Every time I try to picture someone sanding their neck with newspapers, I have terrible convulsions along with extreme stomach pain and watering eyes. Please tell me this is just a terrible mistake, unfortunate accident, or even act of terrorism

Wouldn't the wood just get covered in print?

I've been using Tru-Oil which I sand to 16000 with micro-mesh. But I'll be starting to use KTM-9 for some projects this winter.

sorry man. didn't have high grit on hand. i'tt try to get 15090-2400 grit for future jobs. already started with the satin, so it would not be good to swapm finish method completly. i will experiment with future jobs in the future. this is my personal moding bass. the knobs are broken off, and a nasty deep scratch or 2. after the neck, i will put a dark ring of varnish on the outer ring of the headstock, and a cheap thumbrest, and add vintage looking fender bridge and pickup covers. it will look pretty vintage, especally considering it is from squiers line of wintage modified basses.

i plan to keep this bass, as it is one of my first. probably not going to do things such as great quality pickups, and a bada$$2 bridge. i will do that with higher quality basses in the future, and if the removed parts are better, than i will put them on this bass

sweet, thanks som. I guess I'll use that for my guitar.
I actually made a thumbrest out of plexiglass. Works good, looks good.

well i took a close look at varnish, that thought was satin. turns out it said STAIN. i am an idiot.:eek:. so i sanded it off, and am looking for a clear satin to use. i know to not use newspapers now either. waxy black streaks. i am pissed off the most, because i wasted a month on this with the wrong varnish.
