To be honest unless you stumble upon a used one you probably won't find one.
Alesis Micron is $399 and solid, but only 37 keys.
Roland Juno-D or Roland E09 could be your best bets, but they are both at $495 and $449, or the Yamaha S03 for $495 as well

E-MU Proteus MPS + Orchestral is still a great synth after all these years. Worth looking into. It really depends on what type of sounds you're looking for though.

well then you don't want a synth. a synth makes sounds. since you want your pc to make sounds, you just need a controller keyboard so you can tell the pc what to do.
i like m-audio boards. yes.

Start looking around for a Fatar SL880. A lot of people have said that it's the best feeling weighted controller around. You have to get one used though.
M-Audio's weighted keys are horrible. Great on the non-weighted though.

I just started playing synth about a year ago and I got a microKorg analog synth for about $270 on ebay - sells new for about $400. They keys are small and un-weighted but this thing sounds as good as any expensive digital synth. It's great for an intermediate player and has done wonders fleshing out my bands sound.
