Ok, I have played drums a lil before with a friends old cheap pulse kit, I am also a bassist of 3 years. I'm really not familiar with what brand is good or isn't, I know pearl, ludwig and tama are supposed to be good. My budget is about 600-700 dollars and I want to get everything: kit, hardware, and cymbals... any opinions???

Hmm well just off the top of my head and for that price range, maybe a 3005 or Superstar or something? Most of the Ludwig entry levels really aren't that bad either. I played on one of their $400 dollar Accent kits when I was first starting to play and it wasn't bad at all for the money.
That's all I know off the top of my head really, but there's lots of people on here that know more about the kits that I'm sure can help.

Don't touch any of the Pearl 6-700 dollar kits.. So forget that.

I saw a Tama Imperialstar 5pc with cymbals and hardware but I know it's prolly a beginner set so I dunno what would be best. Can used sets on craigslist be trusted?

Good cond. used sets are probably your best bet for getting good value.. After all, once you get a new set, and use em.. They're used too..
You're not looking for a set in particular anyway, just the best bang for buck.

The best brands for low end drums are Mapex, Sonor, Gretsch, and Yamaha (imo, but a lot of people agree with me on at least most of those; although Ludwigs are decent, I don't really like their sound all too much within the beginner range). As far as cymbals... actual brand isn't so important. The difference with cymbals is how much you're willing to pay. You pay $30 for a new cymbal, it doesn't matter what brand it is, it'll suck (except Wuhan... but those things'll break even with good technique :smash: ). Whatever you do, stay away from Pearl and Tama. Their beginner kits are balls as far as value goes.
The Gretsch Catalina Birch is an excellent kit. Do you know what Zildjians they are?
As far as Zildjian goes, their high end cymbals are:
A
A Custom
K
K Custom
Z Custom
Their effects line
For Sabian:
AA
AAX
HH
HHX
Vault
Signature lines (e.g. Paragon)
A lot of people also like Sabian's XS20 line, but that's more of an intermediate level.
