Looking to get a couple mics this weekend. I need a kick mic and a couple overheads. Just wondering what the standard kick and overhead mics are.
Im just looking for some good sounding mics for a decent price.
Lets say i can spend about $400-450.
I play all sorts of style so the more versatile, the better.
Thanks guys.

Im thinking along the lines of the Akg d 112, and sm81’s.
although im not sure it will all be in my price range, i dont have to get them all this weekend. I hear good things about the akg d 112 kick mic, but id still like to head what you guys think.

Standard kick mics: D-112, Beta52, Audix D6
there really aren't standard overhead mics, but if you're not going to be close-micing your toms, you'll want to use large-diaphragm condensers. the cheapest ones I'd recommend are the AT2020's for $99 each at musician's friend. A pair of those is rather decent!

Check out Apex 415's for oh's - I've used them a couple times, and been pleasently surprised with the out come for the price.
I've also used on guitar amps with good results.
I've worked with D112's and Beta52's both before and would recommend either. If I had the option of using one or the other, I'd probably go D112, but I think it comes down to personal preference.

All the apex's i've tried are crud...i have a 125 (bass mic) and it's a piece of poo compared to my Audix D6.
Speaking of which...what do you guys recommend for stands/clips for OH's, tom/snare mics, and bass drum mics?

almost all mics come with their own standard clip... if you're looking for shockmount clips most companies produce one that fits their own mic. so basically, look through your mic manufacturer's catalogs for the right shockmount clip, if that's what you need.

I have clips for each mic but i need something to attach it to the rim of my snare/toms

He showed them to me as well but i don't know if i should spend that much. I have a lot of thinking to do about that.

Check em out on ebay...Theres some as low as 60 each brand new.
I got a pair just now for 75 each because after shipping it came out cheaper than the others.
But yeah definitely check out ebay.

just be careful with electronics on eBay, there's plenty of fakes/etc. out there.
etp- i will recommend putting tom mics on stands not attached to the drum as you get vibrations through the drum to the clip to the mic when it's on the drum. However, if you insist on going onto the drum the CAD clips are pretty cool.
isolation is your friend :D

i would but given my setup having stands would make it extremely cluttered and difficult...i have my ride directly overtop of the 10" tom rim and i have rotos and my hats over my 14" so it would be impossible to get at them from behind.
Speaking of which...what's a good way to mic rotos? would they be fine with just the OH's?
And as for ebay...i've done pretty good so far.
4 audix D2's
1 Audix D6
1 Shure SM57
and countless drum stuff...You just have to do your research first...check through the sellers history and stuff. I usually only buy from ebay stores to stay safest.

if the OH aren't picking them up enough, try putting a 57 or similar underneath, pointed up at the heads.

amen on both counts -- do your seller history research, and stores typically are safer.

Thing is i haven't tried yet because i just got the OH's off ebay today and still don't have a firepod.
Yeah i usually don't buy if the seller has below 99% feedback.
