View Full Version : emad durability?

I have heard that emads break pretty easily, and I dont want to put a falam pad on my bass drum because I'm recording this week, and I'm not sure it will give me the sound I want. I what is the difference in sound between the emad and emad2? Does the second ply deaden it a lot? I used the regular emad and it sounded killer, but took it off and traded it to my friend becasue it was too thin, and I was using IC's with wood beaters. I have the dw 5000's now so I am not so worried about it, but if the emad 2 is just as good, plus more durable, Im going to pick it up.
Either way, if I could get some input from personal experience, it would be great.

i don't have any personal experience with emads, but i've also heard claims of them breaking or the foam rings falling out.
the difference is between 1 ply 2 ply heads between emad and emad2... no they don't sound the same.
if you like the sound of the 1 but are afraid to break it, get a little beater patch such as a Falam or whatever.
switching from IC's to 5000's doesn't make your stroke less powerful, that's silly.
yep :)

I've had my EMAD a year or so now. Still going fine. Although it's had AF patches on it the whole time.

I've had my EMAD batter for ages, had no trouble.
My EMAD reso, though, is another story. Those damn foam rings keep falling off.

I've had my EMAD for a couple of years now. The plastic that held the foam in fell off a year or so ago, but I re-attached it with some epoxy and it's held since.

Mines been great, great sound flexibility, the head is great but I have a patch...the only problem is the plastic ring that holds the foam in it starting to break in one place.

Also, using wooden IC beaters will trash any head, regardless.

Yes, I know. But switching from a wood beater to a felt beater makes each stroke a lot less damaging.
Will the falam do anyhting to the resonance?

do you bury the beater?
if so, no.

not to the resonance, but it adds a 'click' to the sound, especially when palying it with plastic or wood beaters, which gives a bit more defined sound

Your EQ will probably outweigh the difference more so than a patch.
