Intestine Baalism - An Anatomy Of The Beast
Intestine Baalism's first album is a very unique blend of oldschool styled brutal death, black metal-y segments, and very well done melodic death metal. Solid drumming and absurdly good vocals.
Angmar

Katatonia - Dance of December Souls
This album is easily my favorite by Katatonia. Some of the most sorrowful and powerful doom/black you will ever hear. Jonas' vocals are very intense and put fourth heaps of emotion behind the slow and dark music, light synths also add to this incredible experience.

Stargazer - The Scream That Tore The Sky
The only full length 'Avant-Garde' Death Metallers, Stargazer. It's quite a bright sounding, upbeat album with some nice oriental/middle eastern influences subtley thrown in. Instrumentally it can be a bit chaotic at times, with the time sigs leaving little for any headbangers. The rhythm section is fantastic though. Definately on par with the Norwegian Avant-Garde Metal heavyweights.
Come to think of it, most people I know who've heard this dig it. Underrated largely due to it being unknown.

Chimaira: Chimaira
You know I wold actually agree with this.
My album would be Goatwhore's "A Haunting Curse".
There is not one thing wrong with this album to me. The drumming is by far some of the most tight and precise work Ive heard and rhythmically (sp?) the guitars are on the same level. The songs genuinely feel morbid and the the music as a whole could bring buildings down.

Okay seriously, I do have one I wish to share.
Winterthrall: Nightmares for the Sleepless
Largely underrated probably just due to being relatively unknown. This is a wonderously composed melodic black metal album. I think it's extremely original in it's combination of great melodies fused with powerful vocals, a very epic feel (especially on "In Frozen Apathy") without being cheesy in the slightest, whilst still retaining a very kvlt feel.

My Dying Bride - Turn Loose the Swans
Everyone seems to prefer any album to this one. When I initially bought it (yes, I bought an album before) I thought it was as close to perfection that I'd heard. The vocals were made greatly in contrast to how the music developed, and the song structure was fantastic for a really doomy sound. The whole concept was great, and in comparison to any other album this one sure stood out.

i agree totally!! its their best album ever, and it was my first album by them too!
Steaming Coils - Breaded LP
The best band you've never heard. They were somehow doomed to obscurity outside of a small cult fanbase in L.A. Even in the almost 20 years since the release of this album, it hasn't really picked up any steam. Which is a shame, because it absolutely is perfection.

Old Funeral- The Older Ones
Was the first band that Abbath and Burzum started together, is some really good old school norweigan black metal, though alot of people call it death metal and was one of the first bands to kick off the norweigan extreme music scene though the band split up in 1992 after releasing only three albums

I have never heard much ado about this release so...
Vinterland - Welcome to My Last Chapter
Just one of the absolutely best melodic black metal albums ever, great melodies (obviously) and vocals, just through-and-through solid song writing, great atmosphere and it doesn't get overly "grim" or image-of-a-bunch-of-make-up-wearing-d&d-freaks-conjuring.
But then again maybe everyone loves it.

Hacksaw To The Throat - Wastelands
Really unique blending of melodic death metal and technical death metal with a lot of acoustics and instrumental interludes. Their bassist does really cool high screams and their guitarist does growls similar to Corpsegrinder. My personal favorite track off this album would be Destroying The Vile Red Falcon, it's about contra.

Persefone - The Truth Inside The Shades
This one is undoubtedly the one of the best, and most underrated melodic death metal albums out there. It leans towards the symphonic side of the genre, throwing in classical piano and synth arrangements together with weaving melodic guitar work which can actually pace itself rather than going 500mph. Its music that relies on dynamics a la Opeth (without the drawn out boringness) with a mix of clean vox, slow piano/guitar driven parts and aggressive, heavier parts. For fans of Opeth, Winds, Kalmah and Dark Tranquility.

This band really blew me away. They really achieved the whole dark and gloomy overwhelming feeling that funeral doom needs. The whole demo is just a slowly building wall of darkness. Very creepy stuff. Down the line they turned into "funeral folk" metal.

Bad Acid Trip - Lynch the Wierdo
I love this record. I'm well aware that they're neither the best mucians around. However what I do love about them is the pure (very probably) drug-addled insanity of everything they do. (See video for Beef-Moo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_Wpo7fsHXk) Definately worth a look in my humble (yet simultaneously esteemed) opinion.

Mike Oldfield - Crises
Whilst Mike usually gets high praise for his first and third albums, Tubular Bells and Ommadawn, his eighth album Crises is a really great blend of new world and rock 'n' roll. It features some of Mike's best guitar work on Taurus 3, and the 20 minute long title track never gets boring. In addition, the incredibly catchy Shadow On The Wall only just edges out the vocally driven Moonlight Shadow and Foreign Affair. The only let down is In High Places, and that's due to the stupid electronic vocals. Seriously an underrated album.

Candlemass - From The 13th Sun
It does not have Messiah on vocals, so most Candlemass fans would shun it. Instead of Epic Doom this is more Psychedelic tinged. Crushing guitars and more keyboard combined with great vocals (though not the same as Messiah) make this one of my favorite Candlemass albums.

This album was horribly lame. Each song seemed to have a huge overblown intro, the vocals are terrible and it's ultimately never going to match up to Kenose.

Persefone - Core
If you can find it, this is a bitchin' album. Continuing on from where The Truth Inside The Shades started their music (props to StreetlightRock for also knowing about this band), Core improves on their style with an hour plus long, 3 track album about the goddess Persephone. Face melting guitar lines, acoustic passages, killing keyboard parts, pants-browning vocals...everything you could ever need.

I absolutely LOVE!!! symphonic metal and this is one of the genre's best imo. Stunning vocals by Fabio Lionne, great guitars by Luca Turilli, and Alex Staropoli playing one of the greatest keys I have ever heard. Might be somewhat known on these boards due to Bartenders promotion of this album some years ago, but generally this album is terribly under appreciated. Neutral Milk Hotel - On Avery Island
It's ridiculously fuzzy and excessively noisy and doesn't flow as well as it's better-regarded sister album "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea". In short, it's not as good as the latter, but not as bad as most people seem to think it is (I actually find myself listening to it more than the other one).

Soilwork - Natural Born Chaos
It just has an atmosphere that I haven't heard on any other albums. And every song is very carefully crafted on top of that.
The Dillinger Escape Plan - Miss Machine
DEP's second full - length endeavor seems to be, for some reason, considered a major downgrade after Calculating Infinity, at least around here. I actually prefer MM to CA. It has more variety, and Greg is a much more versatile singer than Demetri.

This is the very best of Shad's MDM days. The guitar work is great, not only during the heavier parts, but the accoustic parts as well. You might notice a bit of an In Flames and Opeth influence in this ablum. The vocals in certain choruses of the songs break off into one person growling slowly while another sings cleanly and a bit faster, and it comes together perfectly with the riffs and beats.

Waking The Cadaver - Perverse Recollections Of A Necromongler
Okay this album is sick, it's not some fake *** pusycore, it's real brutal **** like Devourment only more sick. The singer is seriously brutal, he sounds like he's gargling razor blades while hitting a bong, the type of dude who would cut a bitch open just to feel her pussy from the wrong direction and the guitars are so brutal cause they're tuned so low. The drummer is really sick and fast, and he does a lot of crazy off beat stuff during blast beats, rather than hitting things routinely like some perfectionist nerd.

Black Horizons - A Dream Funeral
I think they're from Germany, they have a very Dissection-like sound, blackened melodic death metal. A really good album. I hope to review it soon, keep an eye out.

The singer is seriously brutal, he sounds like he's gargling razor blades while hitting a bong, the type of dude who would cut a bitch open just to feel her pussy from the wrong direction.   Nice Descriptive Powers There.
Pelican - City Of Echoes
I have said it a million times before, but I'll say it again. City Of Echoes is an amazing album that many felt was not as "heavy" or that Pelican had somewhat "sold out" for making a less heavy album with shorter songs. They were completly incorrect. City Of Echoes has phenominal haunting melodies and catchy guitar lines that none other than Pelican could create. It's still Pelican, it's just a different side that many people are too stubborn to take on.

that's a good album.
Oh yeah, and Converge's You Fail Me.
Regardless of the label change it's still the same old Converge and I think they came back stronger than ever.

The drummer is really sick and fast, and he does a lot of crazy off beat stuff during blast beats, rather than hitting things routinely like some perfectionist nerd.
wait, you're serious?
I heard the similarity to Devourment the first time I heard their new songs, but it seems considerably less brutal, more lame, and more repetitive than Devourment.
I don't even like Devourment either.
edit: ok you aren't serious (at least I hope you aren't)

Dream Theater - Train of Thought
Despite the day-and-half long songs (and James Labrie), this album is consistantly entertaing and heavy. Not to mention just the ridiculousness that is Dream Theater to begin with. Petrucci will handle his.
see "Endless Sacrifice" 6:58 to 7:23 and then again from 7:35 to 7:50 for CFA

You're officially a moron. :p
Wormed - Planisphaerium
Perhaps this is not very underrated, but it should definitely be circulated more.
Brutal, heavy, unforgiving, and with an inhuman vocalist.

I would say so.
Waking The Cadaver hardly has anything that can be classified "vocals", they're more of just a gurgling sound.

It's not like what he's doing is very hard. The only thing I can't get down that he does is the bree sounding gurgle. The upper-throat inhaled thing that sounds like puddles being stepped in is really easy, his breeing isn't that great and his growling is average.
He handles it better than me overall, but if he didn't that'd be pretty sad considering he's probably been doing it at least a couple years. He's definitely improved since their demos though.
edit: I'm not saying it sounds bad, because it's actually kind of cool sounding.

Wormed's vocalist sounds like if kermit the frog was pig squealing and doing gutturals, it's awesome. That part in Geodesic Dome where he just goes "hhrrrrrrrrgh" rules. You know that part.
That song also has a brilliant xbreakdownx.

I'd imagine he sucks live seeing as how most of his vocals sound somewhat processed (not completely, but somewhat).

It's said that he needs studio help to get that sound.
Bear from See You Next Tuesday did the same thing right... until his lungs were working to like 30% capacity.

That breakdown gives me chills every time.
Okay seriously, I do have one I wish to share.
Winterthrall: Nightmares for the Sleepless
Largely underrated probably just due to being relatively unknown. This is a wonderously composed melodic black metal album. I think it's extremely original in it's combination of great melodies fused with powerful vocals, a very epic feel (especially on "In Frozen Apathy") without being cheesy in the slightest, whilst still retaining a very kvlt feel.
seriously i cant find this and i really want it
anyone care to direct me to a source for downloading this?

It's far from metal, but Sunny Day Real Estate - Diary.
I guess when it's become more influential over time, but I always think it's underrated. When I heard it for the first time, just the way Jeremy channeled those emotions into music blew me away.

Love Lost But Not Forgotten - Love Lost But Not Forgotten
Such a good combo of metalcore and screamo. Awesome vocals, awesome lyrics, perfect portrayal of pure frustration in metalcore dissonance paired with nice emo melodic parts. Just walking and feeding and walking and feeding.

Tool - Lateralus
Thought-provoking, philosophical lyrics, mind-bending polyrhythms. It's like rock music for smart people. I dunno why more people don't know about/like this record.
SugarCoatedSour

Actually I'd say Lateralus is a bit contrived and would recommend Aenima over it. No doubt it's a great record, but as far as Tool is concerned....AENIMA.
As for my own recommendation
Captain Beefheart - Trout Mask Replica
Unknown about and preceded most experimental rock and punk aesthetics about 20 years.
Henry Cow - Leg End, Unrest
Completely awesome band that managed to make a convincing hybrid of jazz and progressive rock with few of both genre's pretensions.

Well obviously, but I specifically had Beefheart in mind because he did stretch the conception of the music in his genre. I'm sure that he's widely regarded for his eccentricities, but the music itself is underrated.

I generally get the impression that Captain Beefheart is regarded as some wierd for the sake of wierd guy. I think that outside of his fanboys people wouldn't give the music much credit. And not much can be said of fanboys so with that said, I get the impression that his music and that of the magic band is underrated.
