I am from Australia and I am going to Stuttgart, Germany over the Winter to do university exchange. I was wondering if anyone from Germany or any of the neighbouring countries would be able to recommend some local and/or not so local bands that I could get CDs of or go see live. I'm sort of aiming for bands that I wouldn't otherwise hear of, living in Australia. The sort of music I'm looking for isn't very specific, but anything along the lines of death metal, black metal, doom metal or progressive metal would be appreciated. Especially melodic death. Thanks :)

I actually going to say they're from the gayer side of the Power Metal spectrum as well, but eh, figured I'd play nice.
Seriously though, those bands are gayer than Manowar.

Thanks a lot guys:)
Keep them coming, and please don't say bands like In Flames, Kalmah, Children of Bodom, Kreator etc etc. I've been listening to those bands for years.

I don't have last.fm
The whole point of this thread was for me to get some names of bands that I would never hear of anywhere else but Germany etc. In Flames, Kalmah, Children of Bodom are huge international acts. I assumed most people on here would be able to distinguish between them and more localised bands.

I'm going in Europe's winter too. I'll be landing in Frankfurt on Jan 4th.
And a lot of the bands that are famous to me seem to be unknown to you so far, so you can see why I asked for a last.fm, or even just a list of bands you already listen to.

In all cases is a good site to search after awesome metal bands here http://www.tolkien-music.com/discography.htm according to my meaning. Use simply Ctrl-F and search after 'Germany', look then at all lines with 'metal' as the bands description. If you like stuff thats influenced of tolkien anyway, themes are very important for me in music
Self, I like black metal band Legion of Sadism who made a very intresting version of Hermann von Linggs poem Der Schwarze Tod, even if they dont have any fantasi overtones. I shall mention a few other bands if you will...

oh cool, I'll be in Germany from the 3rd of January to the 22nd of February. I won't put a list up here because it'll be far too big, but you guys have already mentioned a lot of bands that I haven't heard of. The whole point was to find out the names of some good local metal bands, so when I'm there I can involve myself in some gigs and get a bunch of cds that are not available over here in Australia
I did once look up last.fm and it looked like too much effort so I didn't bother, but I'll look into it again. You guys seem to be raving about it quite a bit.
de svarta trollkarlarna: cheers mate, I am a fan of Tolkien so I'll have a look at that site
Caliban are pretty german. But not too good.
Bridge To Solace is one of the best european bands (ie, one of the worlds best bands).
Cold Existence is a great Swedish band.
