Also, has any one here ever heard of Drift? Heavy screamo similar to One Eyed God Prophecy and Union Of Uranus.
I think I've heard the name somwhere, never the music though. Sounds tight, I love Union of Uranus!
Btw, the DED was fantastic man!

Then you have to scope this http://www.mediafire.com/?1tsleiwcxoi
Drift/Jonah split both do the Uranus type sound.
And I'm glade you enjoyed that DED.
Awesome dude! I'll give some feedback later.
Song of Zarathustra are so ****ing good btw!
I'm going to check them out.

Eh Song of Zarathustra are alright, I always liked The Book of Dead Names better.
i always associate them together because of stupid interpunk and their lame ordering crap.
Definitely, get The Birth of Tragedy.
Well, A View From High Tides is also a pretty good album.
Any Shikari fans in here?
I loooove Shikari! The split with Louise Cyphre is amazing.
Yeah, great split!
Robot Wars is also outsanding.
and the La Quiete / Louise Cyphre split is also magnificent imo.

Agreed for sure.
La Quiete are so awesome, easily one of my favorite bands ever.
The self titled 7" one of the best records ever imo.
They are quickly becoming my favorite band in the whole genre.

This Heaven in Her Arms album is way overproduced. If they would just back off the loudness and clean sound it would be way better. Drums are kind of annoying too.

Are you shitting me? The Toddler LP is one of the most destructive/devastating hardcore albums of the 90s. They helped lay the groundwork for all those great bands like Orchid, Ampere et al. To say that band is pretty decent is sign of ignorance because any educated punk can tell the strength of that band and their influence.

Actually, Will says that Union Of Uranus was his main influence, or I think that's what I've read.
Uranus and OEGP are considered to be the main influences on Orchid, though in interviews the band did Will mentioned most the German "metal" (I put that in "" because I have not heard these bands as they hopelessly obscure, and going on Orchid's sound I can't quite picture metal being much of an influence) bands Systral and Carol.
Systral are amazing and I can see their influence in Orchids sound. I still need to hear Carol but I haven't been able to find any.

im surprised you havent added gospel or kidcrash to that list considering how you always talk about them.
but yeah that is a good list to start from.
Gospel and Kidcrash aren't really drastic impactors on the sound.
Gospel is kind of an anomaly for stoner rock fused with screamo.
Kidcrash is basically just an embellishment on Off Minor with a few more bells and whistles.
I don't think the list is really to show off the best records in the genre, or at least my favorites. It is more to be an easy to follow linear path of the genre. Shotmaker should be on there and I think I am going to edit it a little.
Iluvatar
01-23-2008, 10:11 PM
Yeah but then again how much did Hot Cross really impact the scene that hadn't already been around in some form.
Technicality but I mean yeah. I remember you saying you didn't even like some of those bands that much, I was just commenting that you seem to think they are at least the biggest "innovators" since CTTS or w/e.
JumpTheF**kUp
01-23-2008, 10:14 PM
Why isn't there any Off Minor?
pixiesfanyo
01-23-2008, 10:15 PM
yeah, but look at all the impact CTTS and Hot Cross have had. lots of bands cite them as a source and while Hot Cross may have been somewhat ATDIish they certainly pushed post-hardcore and emo to a brink it hadn't been to with 'Cryonics'. I guess because of Risk Revival their popularity has gone down a little bit, but they were hugely popular just a few years ago and along with CTTS probably one of the reasons emo/screamo has become so popular.
The list is definitely in need of a overhaul though, when I get the time I'll do that. One of my wishes is to essentially copy the style of 'American Hardcore' in the setting of emo and screamo.
pixiesfanyo
01-23-2008, 10:17 PM
Why isn't there any Off Minor?
because, i wouldn't necessarily describe them as extreme innovation. they essentially combined a sound that was highly popular in the mid '90s (Unwound, Fugazi, Rodan, etc.) with the aggressive side of Saetia. plus in just the eyes of 'screamo' they are just an embellishment on the sound Saetia and like minded bands were originally playing with.
Iluvatar
01-23-2008, 10:21 PM

pixiesfanyo
01-23-2008, 10:28 PM
I just like the oral history approach and think it'd work really well to expose some of the inner cliches of that scene. Where as most of the people involved in the early years of hardcore look back on that time as something positive and declare themselves part of that scene, it seems alot of emo people deny being emo or whatever and are ashamed of their past endeavors.
Iluvatar
01-23-2008, 10:29 PM

okay,
#1. I didn't write the music, I just screamed over it
#2. one of the songs on the page was written by our guitarist while he was in 10th grade
#3. looking back on that project, we laugh at how much of a Through The Eyes Of The Dead rip-off it was, but it was still a hell of a lot of fun to play the shows we did
#4. melodic death + breakdowns =/= metalcore
#5. I wish we had more recordings of that material, with the lyrics listed and everything for every time people thought we took ourselves seriously.

There's a difference between really obviously trying to make fun of something (and letting very obvious jokes fly over your head in the process) and saying, "I dislike your music."
And regardless, I'm still not mad, I just thought I'd try to point out where pixies was failing horribly.

breakdowns, there is a slight influence of metalcore on the way the riffs progress that i wouldn't pin totally as death metal. death metal tends to usually be very atonal and dissonant, where as metalcore tends to have a lot more riff based progressions.

No, tons of death metal is very riff oriented, as it stemmed from thrash, son.

breakdowns in metal can't be different from breakdowns in hardcore because breakdowns are defined as one thing. if a band is playing music with breakdowns they are inherently inspired by hardcore, as it is something that has risen out of that scene. just like if someone is using guttural vocals, they are inherently inspired by death metal.

Yeah, but we're not trying to be groundbreaking, we're just trying to get drunk to play some good ol' death metal.
And you're still completely missing the point that I don't write any of the music.
And my bandmates are a hell of a lot less boring and petty than you. :)
