Do Fender jazz basses go with metal music at all? Are there any bands out there who have their bassist play a Fender jazz? What would happen if I go to a metal audition with, say, a Geddy Lee jazz bass? lol.
My second part of the question: are there any metal bands left out there would play in standard tuning? Could someone name a few?

Last month I saw James Lomenzo play a Marcus Miller Jazz which in my opinion sounded better than the Warwick he played last time I saw him.
I think that guy is playing a Fender P with a MM p-up at the bridge. You can see it well at the 3 minute mark.

I played metal on a jazz for years. I did have one rednecked guitarist say something about it, but he had only been playing for about 6 months and his band sucked anyway.

Jazz basses are popular with lots of Metal bassists due to the fact they can cut through the guitar alot better than say a Precision

I doubt using a J would pose a problem. Though what sounds like balls to me is when bass players use a buttery jazzed out nickel strings light touch tone in metal. Crazy aggressive mids cut through and give things a little extra edge.
I dig the Opeth guy, but you can never hear him. I guess that's what he's going for, no presence in the mix above 80hz.

Opeth uses standard tuning, except for Ghost Reveries (Open D, or Drop D for the bass).

I bet it was because of the Fender Jazz

Yeah he felt like a ****ing failure and just decided he wasn't worthy of playing anymore.
Nik (Pluperfect) and I actually met him before he left the band, he was cool, and he was unbelievably good at bass, Nik asked him how long he had been playing and I think he said 12 years haha.

Wow, he really quit because of that?

Oh no haha I didn't mean to imply that. I totally made that up. I mean the part about us meeting him is true but he did not quit because of the bass.

since when has what type of bass you have dictated what music you play (regardless of the misleading title "Jazz Bass")

I think I could hear that cat once on the whole album, when nothing else was playing.

I've seen plenty of metalcore/metal acts using Jazz Basses...
One example is the Isis bassist used a Jazz in their earliest stuff and that was their HEAVIEST stuff. :thumb:

they also play in standard tuning despite not technically being metal (but still being technical!)

Isn't it the other way around..

jeff caxide from isis pretty much only uses stingrays now =x
dude from opeth uses MM jazzes, chi cheng from deftones uses fenders sometimes (not sure js or ps though), troy sanders from mastodon uses a p/j'ed fender now, mike dean from COC uses a sadowsky jazz and occasionally a 73 or 75 p. those are just off the top of my head im sure theres a lot more you will be fine using a j or a p for metal although me personally id use a j for metal over a p and a p/j is a even better!

To make things even less typical of what you'd see a metal bassist using... I was playing that jazz bass into an Avalon U5 as my only source of tone shaping!

Jazz basses are for jazz only. Don't try it with metal.

P basses cutting through the mix?
I guess if your playing in a "thud"-rock band.
Roger Waters used a pick for a reason.
