I know Flea is ripped on a lot (I personally love his style) technically but I used to find this piece of slap bass rather impressive! and I still do!

What do you guys think?

oh yeah, maxwell murder solo... POST RECORDINGS!

The endurance is whats most impressive. IMO not the technique

I was kind of reffering to both when I was tlaking about technique. In my opinion, good techniquemeans good endurance, if you know what I mean.

EDIT: Although you are right, you can jsut fight trhough it with good endurance and bad tehnique.

Only reason i'd rip on Flea is because I hate 90% of the Chili's music.

I don't have a thumb that bends so i play like that when i slap sometimes. Its hard to be super accurate when switching strings.

Same, but I try anyways

My thumb doens't bend liek a htichiker either :( But I slap like Wooten/Marcus Miller (in terms of basic posture... I wish I COULD slap like those guys).

DT without upstrokes = proper slap technique

so I've been told, I'm still working on my slap. I'm trying to quit Flea technique and learn it the proper way

I need to figure out how i can stretch more. My thumb is like a 60 Degree angle with my hand, making popping really awkward.

I think I slap alright... I'm going to make a video.

I do the through string like Wooten, each technique is tonally different though. I find it easier to move from string to string going through he string but easier to be on time musically doing it flea style. It all depends on the song. I like being able to do both.

I make a point to practice both kinds of technique.

I can't imagine playing a song like that using the "propper slap technique".

Im going to have to jump on the wagon with Jason on this one.

Love it, I'm learning it atm, its good for building up speed and thats really the only barrier to it.

Learning it partly to impress, and also, as i said, to build up the speed. I think its easier getting that slap upto speed than the finger style bit will be. A fair few hours in front of the metronome...

But it is easier than some other slower slap because you alternate strings every note and I think it's harder to do several quick slaps together or pops together than just feckin go for it between strings.

Fun all the same

The more I hear of the chilis the more I hate it, personally Aeroplane is the only song I can stand to play or hear out of all their music.

As for that song, I didn't make it a mintue in. His tone, his playing style, the riff its self and Anthony Kiedi's vocals just get under my skin too much.

yeah, apparently, but tbh, i've never ever found a song which required DT without downstrokes that I couldn't slap.

who the hell is the C you next tuesday who decided this anyways?

Who decides any standards in music? idk

That's like asking who decided that 4/4 should be common time

yeah, but the thing is, slapping with downstrokes isn't a standard

It's proper slap technique

so I'd say it is...

Each technique is indeed tonally different. So, I do both. It depends on the tempo and the feel, but usually I will slap with thumb going through the string, but for somehting like Nobody Weird Like Me, I will bounce with my thumb parallel to the string. So yeah, I do both personally.

And yes Rik! phillips_185@hotmail.com

I can't slap with my thumb perpendicular to the string. I'm also not going to learn how because I see no advantages in it.

As far as bouncing off and going through, I do both. I don't really notice any difference in tone.

I agree with the first point. I only see more potential disadvantages, in tersm of accuracy, with the thumb being perpendicular.

Hahaha yeah, maybe it's just a mental thing of mien where I think the tone is different, but it jsut feels good pushing through on a nice solid downbeat.

Actually, when I was first learning to slap, I had never seen it done before (that I knew of) so I had no clue what I was doing, I slapped with my finger tips. I never got far with that, but I eventually learned the right way.

Perpendicular to the string, I always thought it felt a more awkward than having my thumb parallel. I tried slapping like this a few times, but, as I said, it felt awkward, and accuracy was terrible, so I left it alone.

I learned to bounce off the string long before I learned about slapping through, which I finally taught myself to do when I learned about double thumbing. I learned this just by watching video lessons of Wooten.

But... where was I going with this?

A lot of people (at least on this forum) seem to say that there's a difference in tone when it comes to bouncing off the string and slapping through it, but I think they're just crazy.
