Alright,So im in grade 10,Im now enrolled in the senior jazz band we are playing Fowl Play arranged by Kris Berg, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h89bUstPrhk thats the tune, now that is not us playing but that is a clip of it,and my band director told me that she would like to hear a bass solo for the solo section,my question is help me out on this? do's? don'ts? what did you do for this peice? what would you do? etc

It's a funky song so I think the funk/blues scale would work pretty well over it:

1 m3 4 o5 5 m7

other than that I'd say good general advice:

- Play up higher
- Play the rest of the song with your volume at 3/4 so you can turn up to full for your solo
- Set your tone so you don't get buried. Try the bridge pickup and not too much bass.
- Like any other solo, know the progression and look for chord tones
- Avoid playing on the root too much, if you play on other chord tones (especially the 5th) you'll stand out more (little tip from Gary Willis)
- Plan out your ending. If you're playing up high, you're most likely going to need to shift back down into a low position at the end of the solo, so plan accordingly. Open strings and slides are your friend.

I think what EADG said is the best advice you're gonna get before this thread turns into a thread about how white folk can't dance or something...

Seems like it's a funk tune, and in funk, it's all about the notes that you don't play. Also, a good thing to do when playing a tune like this is thinking in 16th notes because for the most part, that's what funk is: syncopated 16th notes. In terms of notes and scales, the minor pentatonic, blues scale, dorian scale, and myxolydian scale are you friends.

oh yea, the white folk can't dance. :p

Yeah, rhythm is really important. Look at other videos of that song and transcribe some of the better solos if you need ideas.
Mind posting the chords?

thats a cool song, basically its a funk solo pretty much over one chord. so basically, feel it, and if you freak otu its going to suck, realx, smoke a spliff.

I think the other part is that I have to solo in front on tons of people which is makeing me nervous, what do you mean solo over one chord?

Left Shoe
10-28-2007, 01:34 PM
im not sure what to tell you here, just sort of feel it, i mean notice the chords, be rhythmic and dont over think.

Brandon_S

Yeah,im going to use the mixolydian, that wont clash right? I know it has the flat 7th,but this is in the key of F maj,so im not sure, opinion?

It's seems that a "solo" type line is already written out for you there, so why don't you just use that and just play different variations of it with different fills? If you're that worried about, I'd say that's probably be the safest route to go.

You could always ignore the line completely and go off on C mixolydian/C blues for the C9 section, Eb mixolydian/Eb Blue for the Eb9 section, and C Blues for the section starting with the G9. Just remember that with funk it's more about the rhythm than it is about the notes.

I played this song two years ago in Jazz band. Played it in three different competitions. I improvised the solo and fingered it in all three competitions. Every time, the response I got from the judges was that it needed to be slapped and popped. That's the biggest hint I can give you. Get your slap tone ready when you hit the solo section and slap that solo. It really gives you the aggression and driving force that the solo needs. Slap around in C and you'll get something that fits really well, then just repeat that one phrase that is played in unison near the end of it (octave lower or octave higher than written sounds awesome) and you're set.

Really? That's lame. By the looks of it, it should be more of a Rocco Prestia type of solo, but I guess to the people that don't know any better (the judges) slap = funk.

If you want to fail at music, then always assume that you know better than everyone else, especially if they have much more experience than you and are observing from an impartial viewpoint.

Say what you will, but a nice funky slap solo complements the song so nicely, especially when some of the key phrases are incorporated into the solo.

I agree that a nice finger funk looks like it would be the best option, but with the speed of the song and the fact that it really builds up to the solo, the slapping just gives it that much more OOMF and aggression.

Phil's right you're making this into a way bigger deal than it has to be

if you overthink it you're going to play it like a machine and it's not going to sound like funk at all
