Hey everyone,
I'm late with this again, I know, but I'm busy as usual.
I chose a pretty recent hip-hop album for this week, as promised. It's Timbaland's "...Presents Shock Value," one of my personal favorites from the past year or so. Timbaland is one of the best producers around right now, so this should be a good listen for anyone, even if you don't listen to much hip-hop.
So, the links have been sent. Enjoy, and discuss as usual. I'm taking suggestions for next week, so request away!

Do you really give Timbaland all that much respect?
I mean, if you look at some of the people he made tracks for, you can't deny their commercial success..
But I think that's just the point.

Yes, I do. He's very innovative, I like his use of synth and alternate percussion sampling, and his production is more complex than much of what's around right now.
And are we saying that an artist's talent is now inversely proportional to how successful they are? Because the two really should have no effect on each other.

I know.
I was being general.
But I mean
Nelly Furtado, Justin Timberlake, 50 Cent?
These are just some of the people he producers tracks for...
and they're not people I'll give the most respect to.
That's what I was trying to say.
But I guess the production shouldn't really have any effect on the ARTIST'S own work.
So you could have awesome production, and 50's shitty rhymes over it..
I guess you're right, or whatever.
My bad.
I phrased that really terribly.
I'll have to listen to him before I can talk some more.

That's fine, but I disagree. I thought Timberlake's and Furtado's albums were two of last year's best pop albums, mostly because of the production. Just my opinion, though.
Glad you like it, Pure.

I'm listining.
It's better then I expected.
I hate the rapping on the first song, and the Nina Simone sample is foreshadowing some negative thoughts.
But...
Thanks for sharing.

I haven't got Furtado's album, but I've liked the singles I've heard, a lot, especially the way they sound. I have a lot of respect for Timbaland. I'll definately give this album a listen.

I'll have to wait till monday to d/l this.
I don't listen to anywhere near as much hip hop as I use to. I guess it will be interesting to see if I like this seeing as I seem to like the more underground hip hop.

Nelly Furtado pwns live!
http://youtube.com/watch?v=EVbV635T9Hk
I personally don't like music thats too overproduced. I like alot of those songs by Amerie, Nelly Furtado, Christina Aguilera etc but I always I think the songs sound better live. I don't really like where they compress everything and make it sound like a box then smother it with effects. It kinda ruins a good song for me...

Go for some Latin! Afro-cuban or Brazilian would go down a treat!
We've had a few Eastern kinda tunes already (Trilok Gurtu, Grails, Karsh Kale etc) tis time for something else imo....

I was thinking African this time, or maybe some flamenco.
Retarded Chipple
10-13-2007, 04:33 PM
African would be cool.
I'd be interested out of curiosity in hearing some Flamenco as it's something I've never really come across other than little snippets on T.V. over the years (for some reason I always remember the singer seeming like he was singing really badly out of tune...almost to the point where it sounded like he was taking the p!ss)
Although, I'd also like to hear some really inspiring drumset playing too....

Fela Kuti for African. I love his stuff.
And uhm
Buena Vista Social Club for some music from Cuba...

I'll be honest..I'm not really digging this Timbaland album all that much. There's some good songs on it though, the first quarter is quite good but the rest is boring me atm. I like the song with the Hives, thats cool. The one with Fallout Boy is truly terrible. I cannot stand it.

Yeah, I don't really like that slow, Hip-Hop ballad sh!t.
Much more into the upbeat driving funk influenced Hip-Hop like Blue Scholars, Jurassic 5, Ugly Duckling etc
This is just too overproduced, RnB-like and lacking any "fun" elements for me.

haha yeah
blue scholars are incredible.
I remember you showing me that song North By Northwest.
Too bad Washington isn't alphabetically the second to last state as they claim in that song, or else it would be awesome :(
Hey RC.
Check out a group called The Coup. I still have to get one of their albums, but from what I heard, they're REAL cool.
You'll probably like them.
If you like the funk-influenced production, they'd deffenitly do it for you.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=Iq8yZHJq3Bc
They even have a song called Funk.
If that matters.

Hey Maggot Dream, I like this album a lot. Cheers. I'll be listening to it a lot. Seems to me Timbaland has the Midas touch.
Regarding some more world music, I came home from a Richard Bona gig, mentioned it in the 'hold, and nobody even responded. Clearly they've never heard of him. This situation needs rectified ASAP. Sooner, if possible.
Could you do some Jaga Jazzist eventually? They're a really cool Norweigan band that does jazz/alternative/dnb.

A Living Room hush, even though I never heard it.
I just recognize most of the songs off that album.
alright cool thanks.
As for Timbaland, it's definitely cool, but I'm just not that into it. But he's got a lot of talent

Wow I haven't posted on MXDP for at least half a year, I wonder if anyone remembers me...
Anyhow, I'd like to get added to the list, my email is nsn.ayak@gmail.com (without the .)
Timbaland does seem to be more intelligent in creating beats than other mainstream producers.
