View Full Version : Rate the Drumset of the Person Above You.
Panopticon

This has been done in the past and was quite a success...Lets give it another shot.
Directions:
1. Rate the drumset in the post above you based on setup and finish.
2. Explain why you gave the kit the rating you did.
3. Post 2 pictures of your kit. One showing the setup, and another one to show the finish.
Rules:
- No flaming other peoples kits and no making fun. Give them the rating (from 1 to 10) it deserves (in your opinion) and that's that
- No complaining about the ratings people gave you. It's in their opinion.
- Keep discussion between pictures to a minimum.

zfzgg
10-13-2007, 07:17 AM
[IMG]But, massive props to you Zfzgg for the Ufip crash, did you get that from The Drum Shop?
I surely did not. It's just a cheap 'Primo' cymbal (a ~20" ride), o which I have never seen in The Drum Shop.
I actually bought it with a matching set of ~14" hats from a friend, for $30! A bit of a steal considering they now make up half the cymbals on my kit! :P.
Just for interest's sake:
Hats: ~14" Ufip Primo top / 14" Sabian XS20 top
Left side ride: ~20" Ufip Primo
Main ride: 20" Sabian XS20
I love it, the Ufips are fierce and aren't afraid to let out a roar. The Sabians are, by comparison, clean and mild, whilst still seeming just complex enough to allow me to appreciate them. Combined, I get the best of both worlds! The two rides are an odd couple, but seem to approve of eachother's company, and the combination of hats I've got going is just amazing: Sharp and crisp when closed, washy and spicy when opened, with a lovely slosh.
-And the crash sound on the Ufips is just deadly! I really hated the sound when my friend had these cymbals, but after taking them home I've come to love them for what they are. I never thought I could live with a crash sound like that, but hey, I like it now ;).
Lying on the floor beside my set (Don't call me crazy for this, please):
15" Zildjian A thin crash (Nice, lovely for some applications).
14" Sabian XS20 Hihat Bottom
~14" Ufip Primo Hihat Bottom
~14" junk cymbal
16" Sabian XS20 medium-thin crash
Mostly usable cymbals, in their own way. However, I think I've developed a love for larger cymbals that will not likely go away for a long while.
Other fun facts:
-The Ufips are extremely inconsistent in thickness. Looking at the edge of the cymbal, the thickness varies by a huge amount, every few inches. This, whilst being a sign of shoddiness, is probably one of the biggest factors contributing to the cymbal's odd sound.
-The Ufips are cast cymbals and heavily hammered, which seems unusual for budget cymbals.
-20" Hihats are undeniably intriguing, if somewhat impractical in size and sound. heh.
------
Short answer; no.

A second bass drum is an idea i've been toying with. I don't think i would ever gig with two though. I've been thinking of getting an 18 or 24" bass drum to chuck on the right side. Only problem is it would render my double pedal useless. I don't really wanna put it on the left because it's crowded as it is.
If i were to get a second bass drum it would be an aux on the right side with a single and my main bass would be on the left with a lefty double bass pedal.

I agree with you entirely, just really felt like saying this:
The finish is impossible to photograph properly. The way it changes on angle, with the light... unless I took about 30 photographs in different lighting with different camera settings, it wouldn't look anything close to what it does in real life.
4 up is weird without a floor, I agree. But once I get that, 4-up 1-down is epic as hell.
My hats are very comfortable there. They're much closer than they seem and they're very comfortable to play with either hands and I can still use the foot pedal properly.
I'm going to ignore that one.
Can't bash it 'til ya try it!

- Murdering the heads
- The hi-hat pedal you CAN use does nothing.
- I'd hit my knee all over that cowbell. So you lose points for scraping my knee.
- My other knee would get hurt trying to use the left kick pedal.
=( Don't mean to sound mean, I'm not a mean guy. It's just that your set is the most difficult to play set I think I've seen in years. Almost like you are trying to make things harder?

just a comment obi, you might want to get those mics closer to the centers of the drums because when the capsules are that close to the edge they'll pick up a lot of the high-freq. whinyness that comes from the outer edge of the drum.

damn prices went down a bit after I bought it, the red/black is $150 less! looks cooler too...damn me and my hasty decisions. lol
o i thought it was, but sorry to dissapoint you, it's not the on ei meant.. in our local music store they have this gretsch in the same finish as you do, only gold/black.. it's fenomenal.. but not nearly as fenomenal as it sounds.. and it's 2000+ euros.. I guess other series/wood etc with just the same finish

i flattend the floor tom onec, kept bashing my fingys on it playing my aux hats
the ride looks alot farther away in that pic than it is thought any closer right now and it would be hitting my small tom or covering it up
i definatly do want a new splash placement though its ctually pretty comfy with it there any suggestions

Try moving your ride over your bass drum. Crazy comfy there. Move your aux hats more to the right, since I highly doubt you use them as much as your ride.
For that splash, try sticking it right between your two rack toms.

That pic makes the tom look a little more awkward than it is. I rose the snare so it is more even with the bottom of it. The depth also makes it a little harder to not give it a lot of angle.. but i like it with the angle so it's fine for me.

Wes Jet you get a 6.5. Even if your toms aren't that angeled to me they look to spaced apart and your crashes look high enough that's you'd have to jump for them and you snare/hi-hat placement looks weird. That's only my opinion however. I do like the unusual placement of your snare and the awkward lime green wrap. I also have to say I Hate SG's. Ah, oh well, one again solely my own opinion.
Anyways here's my kit

This is the most recent shot and the only actual difference now is that I threw on a Fyberskyn on the snare.

The way you took the picture doesn't affect the shittiness of the angles.
And it is, in fact, a shity pearl.

to ace76543 you should put your ride off the bassdrum to account for the large gap that is only being filled by that, what looks like a 14" china or atleast get a boom for the ride, and also a stand for your crash and get rid of that pointless bassdrum

To ace...
i'd have given you a 3/10 myself (3 points for the old-school looking tama double pedals)
if you moved your rack toms slightly more towards your right, lowered them (there's a ton of space between the kick and the toms...), it would reduce your tom angles by A LOT.
splash position's alright, just that it seems a bit low to be hit properly.
why on earth did you shift your toms there, if your ride's so far away? IMO, the reason anybody would shift their toms to the "mickey mouse" setup, would to position their ride the way they would if they were playing a 4 piece.
you could probably try swapping the ride with the mini-china, remove the left kick drum and shifting your hihat stand closer, as well as shifting your kick drums nearer to you.
don't just brush advice off. the rule of thumb here is that if you post your kit up, regardless of the reasons behind it, be ready to accept any form of criticism. take at most 30 minutes to rearrange everything and set everything up nicely.. who knows? you might actually like it.
good criticism only works when its harsh.

i'm stuck with this for awhile. i have no money and no job, so i have to wait it out. this is the best setup i can make atm

good critisism only works when it's constructive, like your post. thanks for that. but yeah..i would've done most of this stuff already if i had any money. i've spent like..hours trying to get the right setup with what i have, and my kit is constantly changing.
kinda sucks having no job

You don't need to have extremely good equipment to be able to have a good and clean setup. Lots of my friends play on kits like stagestars, rhythm travellers etc at home.
Basically just sit behind your kit, and visualise where everything would be comfortable. Rule of thumb would be to have as little angle on your toms as possible to prevent excessive damage to your tom heads, as well as injury to your wrist (i can't tell you exactly what the injury is, iirc its carpal tunnel). You shouldn't be playing your toms as though you were playing a Chinese Drum (aka almost vertical). Then position your ride where its comfortable and you don't have you twist much to get it. Get your crashes at a nice height where you don't have to reach to hit them... they don't have to be excessively flat as well, strike a balance between tilted and flat.
Basically you'd want everything as close to you as possible for easy access.
Some people like having everything "in front" of them, meaning they try to have as little items on their sides as possible. Experiment with that and see how you might like it.
Some people like having stuff on the right hand side, so you'll have 2 floor toms and everything else on top. Experiment with that as well.
Hardware should never be a factor in limiting how you setup your kit, unless it really can't be helped. Even on cheap hardware (like my tama stagestar stock harware), I can still get my kit comfortable and decent looking.
;-) Nothing ever came easy for anybody, give it a few more tries before you give up.

thanks a lot for the advice, i'm gonna go try some of that now.
but yeah..the hardware really can't be helped. when i say i have no money..i MEAN i have NO money. the most i ever have at one time is $20
