Ok, so my mom tells me today she has a friend at work that plays drums, but currently isn't using his kit. I have the option of taking it from him indefinitely (until he wants it back) or just keeping it until I have the money to get a new kit. The set is an old 6 piece Pearl Export. I dont know anything about the old exports, in terms of hardware, shell composition, etc(the kit is at least 10 years old). But, as some of you may know, I have my reliable old Ludwig 4 piece that keeps me satisfied. The only issue is that the hardware has been getting a little sketchy.
Anyway, I'll be having a look at these drums sometime in the near future, and I was hoping to get some opinions on what to do and maybe get some more information on the old Pearl Exports. Thanks a lot:chug:

yeah, but the exports would be kind of a step down from my 70's ludwigs...
i mean, Maple vs. Poplar?

Ask to borrow his hardware.

I would go for it, you could always set up another floor tom or rack tom, or have an aux. snare. You could make use of it, it's free.

Personally I wouldn't, I have a huge thing against using other peoples stuff and other people using my own stuff. If anything happens to his equipment while you have it you are screwed. Thats how things always seem to turn out too, your own stuff is always fine, but as soon as you borrow equipment something goes wrong. A head splits, a tom gets scratched, a cymbal cracks, etc. That may just be my luck, but I still don't recommend borrowing something. The longer you have it is also a longer period of time for something bad to happen.

No.
If it was for keeps, yes.
But since it (may) only be temporary, no.
You break it... it aint yours.
Just buy new hardware. Save up, what, all of half a pay check and go pick some stuff up from a pawn shop.
Seriously.
$15 stands from those places can hold multiple toms and cymbals.

Use parts of it to add to your current kit.
Hell, free is free, man. Whatever way you look at it, this is a sweet deal you're getting.

No, it's a horrible deal.
"Here, I'll let you borrow this until I want it back."
What happens if it breaks? You replace it for him. What happens if your stuff breaks? Who the hell cares? It's old!

I am kinda in the middle, if you trust yourself enough go for it. But you know if that stuff gets stolen or what not you will end up liable.

Not for nothing but drums don't break very easily. I say burrow it and use some of the hardware and use it to have extra things

Burrow it? Like some sort of squirrel waiting for winter?

I'd keep the vintage Luddy, and just save up and buy DW9000 hardware one piece at a time, and you'll never need hardware again. Ever!
