Well, they are all possibly the fugliest kits I've ever seen anyone post that isn't berk.
Out of those, I'm afraid I'd go with the Tampax, or the D drum.
Look at pearl visions:

or, if you can find some, Sessions:

Tama Superstar:

I would agree that they are all ugly as hell, I thought the Mapex in Red Wood Fade was probably the least terrible.
Man I am getting compared to Berk...sadness
This forum has scared me away from Pearls. I dont know why. But I really havent looked much into them.

Thats best imo for your price range, depends what you want though, I'm going custom as to get exactly what I need.

I think we have had this discussion before, but what custom company are you going through?

i'm a big fan of Mapex...but DAMN, thats a lot of money for a 4pc.
considering that this is a 6pc for not a whole lot more.
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Mapex-PRO-M-6pc-Studio-Drum-Set?sku=446904
an extra 2-300 dollars gets you more diversity if you need it.

I agree it is quite a bit for a 4pc, but thats when you hit the size game, I wouldnt really want a 16x13 as my biggest floor tom.
In my books, I am leaning towards the Mapex. Thank you for mentioning it though I should probably look around their lines some more.

16x13 toms rock though.
not only that, but come gigging time, its less weight and room being taken up.
tuning it is also less of a bitch aswell

Whats you name? Easier to talk! I didnt mean go custom, I just meant its easier to get what you want. Yeys, it is slightly more expensive but I'm willing for that. Do you need hardware etc?

Learning things. Ok, I definantly need to go out and try some of these other sizes out.
My name is Nick.
And I was just asking what custom company you were going through.

OK, cool. Just wondering if it was a company I had heard of. Last night I ran the numbers on a bunch of custom companies and its a little more than I wanna spend.
How much is your kit going to run ya?
ant_182
10-08-2007, 03:41 PM
about £1800, but a kit that isnt custom, not my perfect finish sizes etc. Is £1400 or so.

Yeh, I might have kept it to a name brand if you like, if I was in the US but I might as well spend that extra for the money involved. Prices are crazy here!

Nah, it is REALLY high here, eg. fuel. But because of what people earn it doesnt seem as much. If our prices were in Ghana or somewhere no one could survive

You can build 4 piece set to your specifications for 1,200$'ish. (Keller shells)
I'd go with the Yamaha :)

Haha yes it is, I hate it. I have a Mapex Pro M so I can vouch for the quality of the kit; top notch. However, as others have said, the size of that kit for the price they are asking leaves a lot to be desired. Definitely look into some of the other packages though...

Buy the kit, not the name; go the ddrum ash. very nice sounding shells.

Says the man who has a 4 peice?
Drum Phil

Yes. But i regret it. I'd much rather have a 5/6 peice with the option to shrink down.
TravisBarkerrules
10-10-2007, 03:14 PM
Yeah, I have been looking into other options and what not. I also noticed that you are able to buy single drums in just about any size you want through Mapex so I think if I end up buying the 4 piece and decide to up the ante I can definantly do it.
But I am going to make sure I look around at other kits and stuff for sure.

If you haven't gotten a chance to check it out, play a Gretsch Renown Maple set. I'm a huge fan of this set, but it's a little pricey. I think around $1300 usd for a 4 piece.

I wouldn't recommend this man, turns out being a lot more expensive. If you forked out for the studio setup to start with, you have a lot more options so even if you only used a 4 piece setup, you would have choice as to what those 4 pieces are. Just my $0.02.

OK, yeah thanks. Its nice that you all are looking out for my best interest. I need to do a bunch more research. Right now, out of all those kits the only one left in consideration is the Mapex.

Good to hear. After going through 3 kits, I'm always happy to help people avoid the mistakes I made. You've made a good choice with the Mapex :P
