I'm after games that test the absolute limits of patience due to completely tedious gameplay, any genre.

Civilisation 3 is one that comes to mind as an example, as fun as it is you need the patience of a saint to get through a single battle. A lot of flight simulators seem to get a bad reputation as well.

I gave up on Civilization a few seconds into it.

I would say Oddworld: Abes Oddysey/Exodus. The puzzles aren't difficult or anything, but there are some sequences where in order to get past some traps/creatures, you need flawless timing and precision in your jumps and rolls.

That was a great game, i've longed to play that for a while. I finished both Odyssey & Exodus if i remember correctly. Munches Odyssey was damn fun as well.

I just remembered Myst, what a pain in the *** of a game.

If you think Civilization is tedious, something is seriously wrong with you.

My picks are Zelda Majora's Mask and Battle for Wesnoth, though the latter is fun, its just tediously long when you play multiplayer.

It's all good i found a torrent for the PC versions :D

If you think Civilization is tedious, something is seriously wrong with you.

You have to be kidding. Each turn takes an age (especially at the beginning before a good network of roads and rail is setup) when you have 20-30 workers all having to move individually 1 square at a time to get 20 squares away where you actually want them, constructing units to defend and ultimately prepare for battle takes long enough but when you want to storm the enemy it is sooooooo slow because of the individual moving of numbers. Unless there are methods of control i have missed I commend your patience if you think i am insane.

Farcry. Gameplay wasn't anything beyond point and shoot, except the AI never missed. You could be a football field away in a jungle and they'd land a headshot on you. Not to mention the save system sucks.

There's an automate function that lets the workers just get on with stuff, and you can block groups of units together, but it's still boring later on. The early game is good, but once all the boundaries are established and everyone's got huge armies it just goes crap. Plus, you can't play on a large map because you're waiting about 5 mins between turns.

Save system was fine if you used the console to save. It was ridiculously hard on 'realistic' mode though.

I never said it was bad, just slow and frustrating if you are impatient due to the nature of its complex turn based gameplay. It can be very tedious at times, IMO it is a good test of patience. I enjoy it for that.

There's an automate function that lets the workers just get on with stuff, and you can block groups of units together, but it's still boring later on. Civ 4 got rid of many of the tedious gameplay aspects, such as Civil Disorder and Pollution. It is by far the least tedious of the other 3 (I admit I haven't played the original, I started on Civ2).

The original Sims was also quite tedious, but the second one is much better. Its much more fun if you treat it as a roleplaying enviornment, rather then as a straight up game.

Definitely Super Ghouls N' Ghosts for SNES. I doubt many of you have played it but one night my brother and I were determined to beat the game because we never have. After about four hours and hundreds of deaths we get to the end and the princess says 'o kewl you got this far but you forgot my amulet!' and they send you back to the beginning to re-beat every level you just spent hours on but on a harder difficulty level (as if it was't hard enough) So at that point we shut the game off and just said we won because no way in hell anyone can beat that game in one run without saving or anything. ugh

i loved getting the cheats on goldeneye, by the time i'd sorted out a run and it just came down to honing it and getting a rhythm going it became intense, especially invisibility and invincibility (invisibility moreso, cause of how short it was)

Flight Sims are a cinch once you know basic flight mechanics. The worst thing is knowing how to set your nav stuff and being able to execute a nice approach. Following your instruments once you can read them is easy too.

the most tedious thing about all sonic games was that you had to play them all at once from start to finish and not lose too many lives or you'd have to start all over again

i'm glad most modern games don't have "game over" situations anymore. i guess back when all video games were arcade ports it made sense to limit the amount of time someone could play on one quarter. plus there are ways to save games now and apparently the Genesis didnt have that crap
