I have a Sim City 3000 addiction recently.

......

There's really not much to talk about without sounding like a complete and utter bore. Discuss Sim City.

Now are these good tactics for getting a good city together -

1. Always use dense residential zones because they house more people, along with dense commercial and industrial creating more industry and jobs etc. I really don't see the point of using Light & Medium residential zones unless you are skint on money.

2. Keep the industrial zones away from the residential because of pollution, with a commercial zone buffer in between.

Apart from that, i'm just reading what the advisors suggest and following it to plan as much as I can. Anything else?

Can you build a metropolis?

I could never ever get a good city going like that.

I've got lots of skyscrapers and massive hotels.

FakePlasticTrees

I never got that. :(

You have to build massive blocks for your zones, at least 4 x 4 next to one strip of road from what i've seen. After that it just seems to take care of itself, i haven't had any particular trouble doing it.

Which version were you playing? I'm talking 3000 if it's a different one.

SNES Sim City was my favorite of all the installments.

And I completely used to own Sim City 2000 as well.

I've actually been addicted to Simcity 4 for the past month..
Just recently got internet hooked up at my new student house so it's dwindled a bit, but safe to say I can build a metropolis if you give me an hour or two.
P.S. Simcity 4 >>> SimCity 3000

I used to have Sim City 2000 for my Playstation, and I was ok at it. I never had a huge city but I was working on one that was doing pretty well until I lost the game.

I tried playing 3000 a few times and I just couldn't get the hang of it. It's really hard to make money in that game, I'd always be bankrupt after like 20 minutes.

This.

I think I struggled to make cities from the start, and I often played with scenarios (which had cities that were fairly well built already).

Yeah, I just the game looked cool. Oh, and 3000 it was for me. Once got myself SC4, but I didn't like it as much for some reason.

I'd go $10 AU. I don't know what that is in Canadian currency.

I did that, made up a little bit of money, but then everyone got shitted off and left my city for raising taxes. After that i was stuffed, so I started a new town.

Man, I never found Sim City to be very hard, at least not recently. Back when I was in grade school playing Sim City 2000 I'd always cheat the hell out of that game to make more money, but I've played Sim City 3000 and 4 and done quite well. In fact, I'm off and on working on a project in SC4 completely rebuilding my city block by block.

I also have the original one for SNES, my brother got it for christmas in 1992 or something and we've been playing it ever since.

So, I found my copy of SC4 and decided to try it out again.

So uh, what should I do first? I want to try and get a huge city going.

Seafroggys

Powerplant, then industry, some commercial, and then residential. Remember commercial works best on busy roads. Then add some water, police, schools, medical, and fire, and throw down some landfill far away.

Meatplow
09-30-2007, 12:17 AM
^

Keep your tax budget in mind though, everytime you add a police station or a school etc you will get taxed for it.

Seafroggys
09-30-2007, 12:45 AM
you can always cut expenses and raise taxes, though.

Generally, in the beginning, police and fire generally in the industrial sector only.

As big as you want, really. You can always subdivide your city too. Really, everything depends on traffic.

I figured out that building lots of small parks around your commercial/residential zones in 3000 helps development

i just started to play 3000 again. I am actually making money now. like 30,000 a year.

the trick is to do only dense res, com, and indus. Also make a huge landfill somewhere. that way you can import trash to get a huge profit.

I used to make huge cities. then destroy them by unleashing all the disasters at once, then regret my decision almost immediately.

So I no have a city with a population of 110Km with about 120K in the bank, but now I'm having trouble with derelict buildings. Theres alot popping up on the map and I dont know why. Plus, there is high demand for Residential and HT Industry, but whenever I zone some space for those demands, there is never any development. I have a lot of zoned areas with little or no development.

In Sim City 3000, Land Value is key to making those big buildings that make your city look sick, so I always, when I have got money avaliable, put large parks/small parks/fountains/zoos etc around areas of commercial and residential zones. Also be near schools and other services, it all helps. If you don't have the money yet, just go back when you do and destroy areas and replace them with parks etc.

I'm at a similar level in the game. Make sure everything is powered and completely watered, and check your layers every now and then to discern the best places to put police stations to reduce crime, fire stations to reduce flammibility etc.

Raising land value helps big time with turning derelict building back into dense constructions, have lots of parks, schools and entertainment facilities nearby. Never put residential near industrial areas because of pollution have a buffer, say a commercial area or a highway in between at all times. Have a subway system and bus stops everywhere as well it seems to help. Play around with ordinances too.

Also i don't pay attention to demands most of the time, it keeps changing regardless of whether i take any action so i just build whatever unless there is a massive demand.

Meatplow

It's easy enough, change the layer so you don't have all the building graphics in the way just the zones. Then determine the appropriate places to put the stations, knocking down existing buildings in the square so you can put them there. Then connect underneath with tunnels, it brings in a tonne of people having a good transit system. Beats the hell out of redesigning your city to accommodate a traditional rail system, i did that and it took ages.

One thing i can't figure out is how to get highways to intersect.

FakePlasticTrees
10-04-2007, 10:19 PM
You need a clover leaf exchange.

I have a highway system built now, so hopefully it'll help out.

Up to a population of 170K now! D:

Meatplow
10-06-2007, 12:24 PM
Yeah i ended up figuring out the highway thing after much trouble. Still i've read on the web it's fairly useless once you have a good mass transit system.

Just sitting over a million in pop now, most i've ever done. The game has gotten extremely repetitive at this point, it's all a case of putting police, fire stations and entertainment where they need to be and replacing desalinization, power plants when they get old along with incinerators.
