when you guys write your lyrics, do you actually have a set melody pre-planned in your head, or do you just write like it's a poem?
cause i've been trying both methods, and all i get is garbage.

I tend to get a general idea of the song I want when I write. Then I write a long-winded draft where I basically write a bunch of ideas down about the topic without worrying too much about structure, rhyme, or any other poetic device. From there, I streamline things, picking things I like, and rejecting those I don't and adding some structure to it.
Still, as I'm doing this, I keep a general idea of how the music itself is going to sound (loud, soft, melodic, etc.) Though, a lot of the times the music ends up differing from what I originally envisioned, so I don't know. It's really all about finding what works for you.

Agreed.:thumb:
I don't write for music anyway, just poetry. But I have put some songs to music, and I don't think I could write with a preplanned structure in my head.
Seems too restrictive.

Really, I just wanted to use homophones, but I feel it somewhat applies.
I couldn't map out, in general, how I write any given song.
And quite frankly, I feel it'd be pointless to do so.
So really, you write a given song in a way that's right just for that song.
Either way, I didn't mean to be egotistical.
This could help? ITs from musesmuse
