Hi all. There was discussion in the commune thread about doing some sort of Jazz, Funk & Blues forum collaboration, eg; someone/some people (rhythm section) lay down a groove and others record over it and we'll see how it sounds.
Basically I'm asking whether you guys think it'll be a good idea and how many people would get involved.
Post your instrument if you please also. But like i said, this is just an idea at present, to gauge what people think.
Thanks heaps! :thumb:

I'm in on this (considering it was my idea)
As a bassist, I have nothing to lose but my timing, but a world of melody to gain.

why do you need timing when you have drummers

Starting out on, maybe we could do something well known, like maybe as a example Chameleon (ultimate jam song). And then when we know who's going to do it, we could set it up so that we know how many bars/measures/minutes everyone will do, and then make the backing track according to that. Then we give whoever is soloing first the unedited track, and then when that user is done, they'd upload it and give the link to the next soloist, and so on and so forth until it everyone has played.
why do you need timing when you have drummers
Because, being a bassist, you play rhythm/keep time, and that is what you are told to accept and it is the ethos that many live by. But when you decide "hey i'm gonna solo now, lose the rhythm, play a little melody here".

Bass: Bassists are not terribly smart. The best bassists come to terms with their limitations by playing simple lines and rarely soloing. During the better musical moments, a bassist will pull his strings hard and grunt like an animal. Bass players are built big, with paws for hands, and they are always bent over awkwardly. If you talk to the bassist during a break, you will not be able to tell whether or not he's listening.

It's one of the more hilarious things I've ever read, if you care to read it all

that website's hilarious.
"”Not a real talkative bunch, are you?” she asks rhetorically, then turns to the band. “Well, I guess we'd better give them something to talk about.” She winks at the sax player, who almost spits. “Do you fellas know 'Summertime'?” There is a collective shudder. “What key?” the pianist asks, knowing she won't have an answer. Her veneer momentarily fades; she is in trouble. She did not prepare for the session by practicing or figuring out her keys. She prepared for it by buying a new outfit and having her hair coiffed."

i reckon its a really good idea. but you'd have to have someone with great organisation to keep on top of it all and you'd need committed contributors. sounds like an awesome idea though.

I'm a drummer, i play keys (rhodes) also. So i'd be down for either or both. Traveller plays sax, clari and drums.
What song should we do? I saw someone mentioned Chameleon, are there any other suggestions?
I'm keen for any song really, trad, bebop, funk etc. Anything.

I play sax. I'll play anything. I'd prefer something at least slightly weird, but a traditional song is ok I guess.

Break On Through by The Doors, although it is a rock song, would be really easy to turn into a jam song. E blues scale is all it is (really easy for guitar/bass :)) Hell, I could arrange that, or maybe you could learn the keys to it. It's not a hard line, and I think it would sound pretty cool. And then there's So What. Easy on bass, don't know who would have trouble with it.
Or else someone (like you) could make a drum beat, then we could have a designated guitarist to set up a chord progression or a designated bassist make up a bass line.

So What sounds good, i could do some sort of track for that on key & drums. I'm not sure about The Doors' song though, i don't know it.
I could arrange some harmonies for So What, for saxes etc? But i'm easy really. I mean, we could start with So What and then if it proves too disinteresting, hard or easy; we could try something else? I don't know, just a thought.

Ah, k. Let me know when you have one. Or i should just lay down some things to have something to work off?
Drums, bass and chords should definitely be first?

Alright :)
I'll see if i can lay down some drums tomorrow. Hmm. How long? Like chorus wise? Or just record like 10 minutes worth and go from there?

Okay I'm in, I play guitar and clarinet, but I don't have a clarinet right now.
So Ando! Please tell me more about your 14 year old sister. I hear she's a fox!
