I came across this in my search for a laptop.

My computer-savy friend said he wouldn't even pay close to $550 for it, but I figured I'd get a second opinon.

Specs:

Windows XP Home Edition
Mobile Intel Pentium 4 Prcessor 523, 3.06GHz
512 MB DDR SDRAM
80 GB HD
15.4" WXGA TFT Screen
DVD RW Drive

I also got the following information from it.

Video card is a Radeon IGP 345M and the wireless card is a Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC.

This is canadian dollars, not that it really makes that much of a difference now.

I wouldn't pay more than 50 bucks for that.

Out of date processor, low ram, small HD. Definitely not worth it.

Laptops in general aren't worth it unless you absolutely need the portability.

I'd look into the new Toshibas that are coming out, they have some relatively close to that price range and they'll probably be a lot less terrible

When are they expected to be coming out?

They're out. Just check around BestBuy.ca and see what you can get. You're going to want a Core-Duo, or the AMD equivalent, and don't go for anything with less than 1GB of RAM.

Oh, awesome thanks.

Anything else in the $550-700 range?

I'll check later, when I'm not in class (posting this on my laptop, conveniently enough).

Best Buy definitely has a nice Toshiba for $550, there's two of them in my house. I'd give you a model number but seeing as they're not mine I don't even know where they are. Just look around, they're definitely there.

So, I just went to BestBuy and there wasn't much there in terms of my price range. Most of the stuff was $699.99, which isn't completley out of my range, I just had hoped to find something slightly less expensive.

if you can, look into last years models of laptops.

all new computers now have Vista on them, which I hate, but i needed a decent laptop computer for college.

what will you be using your laptop for?

mostly word processing, and internet browsing, but I would like some versatility for gaming.

I'm not talking top of the line or anything, I just like to play a few older games (Diablo II for example)
