So I was looking at the few HD DVD's I own, and wondering if there was a way to back them up that wouldn't take all day and compress them enough to fit on a dual layer SD DVD. Sure I could buy a 100$ 500GB harddrive and simply use my 360 HD DVD player to rip the HD DVD's that I own to the harddrive (I'm assuming a readily available program exists to crack the protection on them), I could even plug my vga cable to my High definition projector and play all my movies directly off the harddrive but...

my computer is not up to playing them stutter-free

So I began scanning the interweb for methods like divx was for dvd. So I found a lot of stuff about x264, I was curious as to whether anyone has used the codec and how long it takes from ripping the HD DVD to re-encoding.

I realize I'll have to play these from my computer to the projector.
