View Full Version : Hot P90's or not?

Hey guys, I've been paid again, so that means more modding :)

I'm just keeping it simple for the moment, just swapping the pups out and a full internal electrical overhaul of my Epi LP Std, so here's my question.

I want a Hum/P90 setup, and I've already decided on my Hum, I want to get a Burstbucker 3 after trying it in an Gibson in a store and loving it, and I was contemplating a Seymour Duncan Phat Cat as its a direct humbucker replacement, but I'm not sure if it matches well with the Burstbucker, is it hot enough or will it not matter?

It also has to be in a hum casing, I can't afford the routing :(

I'm looking for a classic P90 sound, but I want them ideally to complement each other as best as possible. If anyone has any opinions, it'd be great to hear them, and if anyone can think of a better P90 any advice is welcome :D

Thanks in advance,
~Flex

EDIT: Another choice is the Gibson P94R (gods bless eBay), and also there's the offerings from BareKnuckle, I'm told they're exceptional pickups, but I don't have much info on them.

Come on, ten day, 46 views and nothing? :p

Any advice, ANYTHING, would be helpful, I don't know much about P90's

Sell it and get a BFG :p

Wish I could, that's what I tried and loved :p

Unfortunately I only have £200ish rather than £900ish, even if I sold it, I doubt I could make up the difference :upset:

Thanks for the recommendations jaklyons, they look really good, but I need ones in humbucker casings to fit into my LP slot; I can afford the pickups and I can change them myself, but I can't afford the routing which I can't do myself :(

After reading reviews of the Bastard I've decided against it, doesn't sound like what I'm after. Might check out Dimarzio, see if they have any.

Bareknuckles are brilliant pickups, but expensive. £90ish each.

go for Wizard pickups, much more reasonable than bareknuckle and if you cant find exactly what you want tell them and they will make it for you.
drop them an email or phone

They ARE?

Damn, man, where?! Everyplace I've been IRL to look they're around £900, and online the cheapest I've found is £790

True, but I have around £200, and I don't have to pay to install them if I do them myself, so if they're worth it.... :P

Hmmmmm, do I save up my next three months pay and buy this, OR mod my Epi and buy a better amp.....

Thats a good point, but would a Gibson really sound its best through a Spider II 212? :P

There are worse amps... Just please don't play it through a Marshall.

God no, I have taste :p

I was looking into Orange Rocker 30's, seem pretty sweet in the short times I've ever got to try them.

I like Orange amps :thumb:

Every single guitarist I have ever heard playing through a Marshall has sounded exactly the same :(

Very true. I'll admit, they're good for a certain tone, but it's a tad over-used, and as you say; very same-ish.

Orange FTW :D

Since you managed to find an UBER cheap BFG where I couldn't, there's no chance of you looking for a Rocker 30 too? :p *pushes luck*

:p

My only complaint is the lack of fret markers....and the fact it costs about £645 more than I can afford :(

Lol, yeah that tends to be a downer.

The lack of fret markers you soon get used to though, and there's markers on the neck side anyways :)

Seriously, I'm not a Gibson fanboy by any means, but damn the BFG is a sweet guitar
