View Full Version : Metal bands with awesome bassists.

Tell me about them. Between The Buried And Me's Dan Briggs has changed my (musical) life, and I want to know more of this sort of amazing metal that's not just shredding guitars and double bass, but has an incredible innovative bassist as well. The only metal bands I know with exceptional bassists are BTBAM, Iron Maiden, early Metallica, and...uh...well, I guess that's it. Thanks in advance everyone! :chug:

Dont let fanboys fool you. Cliff burton was not an 'awesome' bassist.
Although hardly metal, the spastic ink bassist is a machine. Pete perez i believe his name is.

Probably my favorite is Steve DiGiorgio from Death (and Iced Earth and Vintersong). He was one of the only bassists that played a fretless in death metal. Check him out, dude is great.

Judging from their crappy music, I think I'd have to agree that Pete Perez probably is a machine. I just tried to listen to them and holy crap, that was horrible. How can you possibly put that above anything off of Metallica's albums with Burton?

Alex Webster is pretty mean.
And Paul Romanko has his moments. Most of the time hes just chugging away driving the guitars, but hes got some cool little melodic fills that he pulls out

problem i find with metal bassists, and especially in smaller bands, and bassists that dont have much of a personal tone, they get lost in the mix very easily, so i think, to a certain extent, its difficult to hear parts.
however, i dont really rate burton, he was different to some others at the time, and i think brought bass more mainstream as its own instrument, however, most of his stuff did sound pretty horrible.

Oh i'm sorry, you seem to put playing root notes and the occasional scale run, and a, lets face it, terrible solo piece ahead of Spastic ink's musical ingenuity. I dont care if you dont like the music, at least respect a good muso when you hear one

Even though I'm not the biggest fan, John Campbell of Lamb of God should get a nod if only for his ability to keep up with the insanity of Adler and Morton.
Paul Romanko of Shadows Fall has done some of the coolest little fills in recent metal, so he definitely gets a nod.

its grind not metal but See You Next Tuesday's bassist is really good, you cant always hear him in the mix though.
and a huge 123 on ryan martinie, he's the reason i started playin.
Sean Malone from Cynic. He actually transcribed a bunch of Jaco songs for this book
myron

Necrophagist have had a couple of bassists. I think the guitarist played bass on the first album, and Stefen Fimmers played on the second, and they have another bassist for live stuff.
But to finger that stuff is incredible.
And lets not forget the Spiral Architect guy, Lars Norberg, specifically the song Insect. i dont know where to start transcribing that thing

dude is freakin good.
not exactly metal but the guy from THE FALL OF TROY is really ****ing good too.
and i happen to like cliff burton too. he was groundbreaking and a biggg influence to alot of people including myself, and he just flat out fit the band perfect, and he composed most of their better songs at the time pretty much by himself.

I am not being an ***! I am merely saying that he is not that great. I have known about TFOT for many years, even back when 20 people attended their shows. He does do a good job filling space, yes, but he is not that good, at least not enough to go "OMG WOW!"
Now, their music is an entirely different story, especially since it continues to go downhill with every release.

I'm kind of surprised that nobody has mentioned Protest the Hero yet. Some would argue that they're not metal, but I'd say theyre pretty metal, and Arif is insanely good, especially live. He uses fingerstyle, a bit of slapping, a lot of tapping, chords here and there, and his lines in general are awesome.
Maybe they're not too popular in the States?

man, this thread has been done about a million times, and i'll always state the same two bass players: steve digiorgio and sean malone . . .
only they could come up with original, fun fretless lines that bordered wankery, and play them flawlessly at 250bpm while keeping in perfect sync with whatever (equally skilled) drummer they played with . . .

I got me and my friends into them but when they played at warped tour, the crowd looked like a bunch of wax museum statues. Them and the Fall Of Troy guy get my votes :thumb:
I also like Eddie from Thrice but once again "questionable" metal I guess.

There used to be this jazz band my friend listened to that was very similar to between the buried and me, and their bassist was equally as good, if not better. Misery Signals has a pretty good bassist. Though hes not super techniqual , hes very solid and provides some sick lines on all three of their cd's. As blood runs black has a good bassist, though he mostly only plays the guitar lines.

^ And their bassist follows the guitar 99% of the time. And live, when his lines that don't follow guitar come in he doesn't even play them. I find that pretty lame.

Sean Malone would get my primary vote as hands down best metal bass player of current time. Old school thrash, don't snuff at Frank Bello from Anthrax, or even Dan Lilker from Nuclear Assault and S.O.D. They are (were) really good all things considered.
Steve Harris really is probably the best metal bassist ever though.

Arif from Protest the Hero is an amazing bassist and a hilarious guy, I've met him several times.
The bassist (the new one at least) in Horse The Band is incredibly talented as well, and his sound is always present. They're a perfect band as far was every instrument knowing it's role and then doing it's own thing.
Dillinger Escape Plan also have incredible bass playing, although often overshadowed by the guitars.
And if you're going to sit and rip on Cliff Burton for what he plays, I really think you should think twice. Sure you can play his stuff easily, but are you going to sit behind a keyboard and say that you could write a significant part of 3 albums that not only inspire but model a decade of metal to follow? The man deserves respect.
