View Full Version : Where did those bass guitar magazines go?

Now that in NY I've been to a Barnes and Nobles, a Borders, and a local drug store we have 10 different types of guitar magazines, 2 different types of drum magazines, and 0 bass magazines.
I need something to read inbetween class (and during class) that's bass oriented. I was purchasing the Guitar Worlds "Bass Guitar Mag" but than apparently after their last release with Pete Wentz on the cover they decided to quit.
Understanding but how can they kill off bass guitar mags and still have drumming ones :thumb:
They're discontinued, probably due to lack of interest

Bass Player is still released.
Acoustic Guitar World and Acoustic Guitar Rock were discontinued as well, being a hardcore, religious, acoustic player, that bothered me, but life goes on.
I still have active subscriptions for bass player, guitar world, guitar player, acoustic guitar, and modern drummer, keeps me busy.

I can't say I ever cared about those music magazines. I've read a few of them, they just don't interest me.

I've always preffered the *-player to guitar world. Guitar World always struck me as a magazine for people that liked guitar, whereas guitar player was more centered around the actual guitarist.

Bass Player caters to the highly skilled, whereas Bass Guitar catered to the more average bassist. I liked the contrast and when both magazines covered similar materials in lessons and interviews and such, catching multiple different readings of the same thing was nice and helped me to understand certain concepts better.
Plus, the songs in Bass Guitar > Bass Player.

Bass Player is a way better magazine though.
Better articles.

I agree BP is better in their article quality. No question about that. I was just saying that BG was kind of dumbed down in their articles, making it somewhat easier to understand slightly more difficult concepts as discussed in BP.
I hate Bass Player
Bass Guitar owned it in every possible way
the only things I really liked about BP were the gear reviews

Oh, I wasn't arguing with you.
Bass Player just feels more professional, and I like that.
I mean damn, the threadstarter said Pete Wentz got the cover of Bass Guitar. He is barely even a bassist!

I'm sorry but I can't stand Jeff Berlin saying that tabs are the gayest thing on earth.
Plus he seems so cocky sometimes....

Uhh...
Wrong thread?

Me personally think that BP's articles are horribly written for the most part or atleast every issue they have that praises the same people. I thought their gear reviews were better but Guitar Worlds Bass Player always had a more diverse group of people as BP focused on the oldies for the most part.
I'll probably subscribe anyway though.

Yeah, thats why they sold so well,
Bass player is actually a very good and well written magazine, but in order to understand this, you have to get this idea of "THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE GOOD BASS MAGAZINE" out of your head and grow up, be happy that there actually are magazines deticated to the instrument and people who play it.

Ever heard of a subjective opinion

All I know is Bass Player magazine cycles several issue articles on Geezer Butler, Billy Sheehan, Stu Hamm, Cliff Williams, and Geddy Lee and somehow it stays in business. I got one bass world issue and it was way more diversified with some modern day stuff.

Yes, hypocrite.
UIAC: you have clealy never read an article of bass player closly enough, with about 4-6 different artist interviews consiting of players from all spectrums of the musical world, including a tuba player in one issue. Last issue had, Jaco as the head - studing his work on Havona, Jonas Hellborg - about his "disappearance", Lee Rocker of the Stray Cats, Trian Porter of the Doobie Brothers, Ginger Reyes of the Smashing Pumkins - about joining them, James Lomenzo of megadeth, 5 questions with Tim Lefebvre, Andrew Seward of Against Me!, Colin Edwin of Porcupine Tree, and their introduce yourself section consisting of Rich West, and Tammy Lee, both just regular players like yourself. So, there you go.
Yes, hypocrite.
How am I a hypocrite

I was disagreeing with your opinion and you responded as if I said you were not allowed think in that manner. So I made the connection that you have disagreed with someone before, therefor, you are a hypocrite. In this situation actually, you are disagreeing with me, and yes reading it now, it doesn't make any sense, but don't distract from the argument. How is bass guitar better than Bass Player?

what
that made very little sense tbh

Fair enough, but you understand Im simply trying to tell you, that there really isn't a choice right now, and bass player is a damn good magazine.

Because this is the bass forum.
Black is white, up is down, bass's play people and nothing is as it seems.

I can live without bass magazines I guess

I have every issue of Bass Guitar, including the buyer's guide. Bass Player...why buy it when they put most of it on the internet anyway? (and the songs they transcribe are ALL 70's soul/R&B tunes...which I have no interest in ever learning for any reason...)

I have more of an intrest learning soul/rnb tunes then learning punk songs :P

Artists I've seen transcribed in BG: Yes, Rush, Black Sabbath
really punk eh

I read Bass Player, but only because I've never even heard of Bass Guitar. And I must admit even after constantly reading BP, there have only ever been two transcriptions that I actually looked at.

The ":P" implies joking.
You can find tabs online, I don't really care about the tabs in the magazines.

o rly I was not aware of this tell me more about this internet you speak of

Tabs suck though
why would you want them

Most of the powertabs I have are as good as magazine transcriptions.

The only reason I ever bought those magazines was for the interviews, the ads, and mostly the gear reviews. I just stopped buying them, would read them in the store, and put the magazine back.
Most of the powertabs I have are as good as magazine transcriptions.
Powertabs and some GP files are the exception. Also, some of them are as good as magazine transcriptions because they are copied directly from a magazine or songbook.
now compare how many Powertabs and GP tabs there are to how many text tabs there are
Akira
09-09-2007, 06:39 PM
How is that relevant to anything? Compare how many Powertabs and GP tabs there are to how many bass magazine tabs there are.
How is that relevant to anything? Compare how many Powertabs and GP tabs there are to how many bass magazine tabs there are.
Powertabs and GP tabs =/= all tabs
in fact if you consider all types of tabs out there, Powertab and GP files are a very small minority
so it's totally relevant
Akira

But why does it matter how many regular tabs there are? I only use powertabs, so those are all I care about.
But why does it matter how many regular tabs there are? I only use powertabs, so those are all I care about.
Because not every song is available in Powertab format, in fact very few are in the grand scheme of things
so you can't use Powertab all the time
anyway my point was that tabs in general suck. That includes text, Powertab, Guitar Pro, etc but the majority are text so that's what I was basing it on
Akira
09-09-2007, 06:47 PM
But I am more likely to be able to find a Powertab for a song than a magazine transcription.
This argument doesn't even make sense.
But I am more likely to be able to find a Powertab for a song than a magazine transcription.
This argument doesn't even make sense.
It totally does to me, I dont see why you don't get it
It's like this:
- I say tabs as a whole suck
- Sure Powertabs and Guitar Pro tabs are usually pretty accurate
- But that doesn't matter because I said tabs as a whole which refers mostly to text tabs as they are the majority of tabs on the internet
- You say Powertabs and Guitar Pro tabs are good
- I acknowledge that they are an exception and a small percentage of all tabs on the internet
- My point that tabs as a whole suck still stands imo
but it's just my opinion so why argue anyway

Although it is associated with gov't you can still use it to imply "let it be." Which is what I thought he was getting at therefor didn't respond.
