Ok, my first assignment at college is to play a 2 minuite solo piece (Any song of my choosing).

Rather than sitting there and playing rootnotes to some pop-punk song like everyone else will probably do, I'd like to play something a little more interesting.

Im thinking along the lines of something with Chords perhaps?
I can tap as well but cant slap/pop so thats outta the question :p

Im tempted to play a 2 hand tapped Mario or Zelda but I dont think that'd go down well with the tutors :smash:

Any ideas?

if you want chords:

Stuart Hamm's version of "Love Thing", "Charlotte's Song"
a lot of Jeff Schmidt

chords and tapping:

Victor Wooten - Ari's Eyes
George Smed - Chocolate Milk (I recommend this one, it's short and not too hard but a beautiful song)

if you want any more suggestions just ask me, I could give you tons more

Thing is Charlotte's is played on a piccolo bass

you can play it on a bass in drop d but it wouldn't sound as good

also I've tried it with an octave pedal and it was ok but nothing's as good as the real thing

Hmmm ok, well I've only listened to the powertab TBH, Im downloading the song now.

If its acase of octaves., I've got a HOG so I could always try and use that to get the sound I guess...

I'd check out Love Thing too if you havn't

http://youtube.com/watch?v=fDzi_QSIou0

it's the first section of this medley

if you can get the right tone and a bit of reverb it sounds quite nice

Do you know what the last section of the video is? I am talking about the tapping/slapping section which starts at about 3:45. Is it from one of the songs or is it just improv?

Charlotte's Song sounds beautiful on a regular bass. That is how I play it.
I suggest that one.
Give me your email and I'll hit you up with a lead sheet for Autumn Leaves.

Im still leaning towards Charlotte's Song, but possibly using my own arrangement I think.
I'll have a play around with a few songs tomorrow and see what I fancy.

it's usually in E minor, however, so you may have to transpose it for eases sake. (so you get the open strings)

its autumn leaves, i dont know who by.

Autumn Leaves was originally by Johnny Mercer, if memory serves me correctly. I played it at a Penn State summer music camp and played in the honors recital with it. Beautiful song for jazz electric bass.
