This guy was amazing, played with the count basie orchestra. Check out this solo. He drops a stick twice but recovers smoothly enough. And check out the stick tricks at the end, just brilliantly done. :smoke:

Yeah :lol: Btw, that old guy is count basie. :)
Gotta love the 2 tricks at the end though, the one where he throws it at the small tom, it spins nicely, catches it, then one under the leg , very nicely executed.

yeah the tricks were great. was he one of the firsts to emphasize spins and throws like that?

That's a really cool video. Reminded me a little bit of Buddy Rich for the snare work and a little bit of Gene Krupa for how energetic he was and his showmanship.

it's not a horrible sounding kit, it's a horrible recording. this was way back in 58, what do you expect.
that guy was awesome. he was like a black thomas lang from back in the day.

I loved the sound of that kit. Nice and mix friendly.
Great drummer. He's often overlooked and everyone goes for his contemporaries [guess who?]
