The rockschool grades are a joke compared to the trinity guildhall ones.

Even Grade 8 isn't all that challenging.

rockschool grades are laughable as a measurement of ability but give people a sense of achievement :)

Someone explain what these are to me : (

They're pieces that you learn, along with selected rudiments and exercises, to show that you have achieved a certain standard of playing.

Rockschool is one company that does them, and is owned buy Trinity-Guildhall, but it oddly set lower than the normal Trinity-Guildhall and AMRSM exams IMO (I'm learning for the piano diploma :D at the moment).

Nice work on the 90% though. In my grade 5 rockschool I only got a merit... which is gay I just had a majorly bad day, but that is how it goes. Judging by the standard of my playing though I would've given myself far lower than the 80% or whatever I got, having done piano exams for over 11 years. Wierd. Nonetheless well done.

Depends on the instructor.

I did **** (at least I thought) on my grade 6 piano play test, but I got... damn... I forgot... around 90%, IIRC. The tester asked me if I was a drummer and we pretty much talked about percussion the whole time. It was awesome.

Holy crap I only know one person that has gotten in the 90's for a piano exam and he's some sort of musical prodigy. I've had a couple music teachers tell me it's near impossibe to get 90's. Is that RCM you're talking about? I only got 82 on my grade 6 and 84 on my grade 7 :(

I've heard that our testing center sometimes marks harder than some of the others in the province though but I dunno.

RCM.

It probably does. I've just gotten lucky in that all the markers seems to really like me. Seriously... it's creepy.

People always say I'm really good at piano but I find it sooooooo boring.

XD

If I wanted to... I could easily have a career in concert piano. But the fact that I don't want to means I'm kinda in the bucket with that one.

Ah damn I hate you :p

I'm kind of behind in piano too I guess since I only started 2 years ago when I was 15 aside from lessons for awhile many years ago when I was really young and did not enjoy it at all. I just did my grade 7 this year and most people at the same level as me are like 3 years younger than me :upset:

I started when I was 4, hahaha.

Grade 7 in two years is damn impressive, man.

Although, I suppose if I had set my mind to it I could've done grade 6 about 4 years ago... XD

That's what I get for being a lazy child and then not caring now.

Grade 6,7 and 8 all earn you UCS points or some initials UCSA or whatever but if you get pass you get 40 points if you get merit you get 50 if you get distinction you get 60 points.

120 Points is equivalent to an A at A level. University's will look at these point if your taking music at your university and if you say have 100 points and the dude next to you has 20 40 points....but you both have exactly the same grades they will pick you over him.

Simple :)

UCAS.

How does being able to play piano get you in for an astrophysics degree or something? Thats stupid.

I reached the lofty heights of LCM Grade 3 and got very close to distinction, then, both my teachers packed it in, and now, i just play for me lol.

But, i'm well above grade 3 for my playing, my reading is poor to moderate though :'(

UCAS points don't really count for ****. Someone could go and get a load of Ds and Es, and have the same amount of 'points' as someone who got three As. Universities looks at your grades

Yeah but if your grades are the same and one has more points the one with more gets the place

Having higher grades doesn't guarantee you a place at a university. Writing a good personal statement with AAB grades could get you in over someone who has AAA. It's not as simple as whoever gets the highest marks gets the position. I've seen people with 6As get rejected before.

Nothing boring about piano mate. I find it a lot more emotionally involving that drums tbh, what with being able to have harmony, melody, sustained notes.... don't get me wrong I love drums too.

UCAS.

It can't help you at all. Only **** universities and courses go by UCAS points anyway. So if I want to do a BA in a balls course like surf science or flooring technology at UWE or one of those new 'universities' that have started popping up all over it might help, but if you want a degree that will help your future employment and be worthwhile they will be no use. e.g. Bristol, Southampton, Exeter, Durham, Oxford, Cambridge, UCL, Imperial College, Edinburgh, St Andrews, Nottingham, Sussex (Brighton), Surrey (Guildford) etc, won't for either all or the more demanding subjects, as with most others.

It's stupid encouraging people to do degrees that are not all that useful - much better IMO to encourage learning throughout life e.g. open university, evening courses. But yeah, this is mostly a drum forum so I will stop now.

If they are going by grades they won't use points as second; they will go by things like personal statement, extra curricular activities (could include music exams etc), etc, which show more what you are like and can do. Cambridge use specific A-level module marks, which is kinda harsh but no matter.

I got rejected from Durham and Edinburgh despite my 5 As in AS. Obv I don't mind Oxford will be better, but goes to show. If you add up my points I have so many from music exams I very much doubt they use them.

edit: sorry for double post
