i know the basics, like the star pattern and whatnot, and i was hella careful when i was tuning a brand new snare. i still managed to bend the ****in rims on it. it's almost embarrassing that this keeps happening, and i need correction badly. anybody feelin generous?

Thats pretty much all you need.
Do that for every drum.

Best thing to do is just experiment. Keep trying different combinations until it sounds good.
And if you're bending the hoops, you're trying to get a sound that your snare won't produce. If you want higher pitch, get a smaller snare.

Agreed.....you must really be cranking down on that drum. Or you've got bent hoops to start with. Next time your heads are off, set the hoops on the floor to see if they are indeed flat and not warped in any way.

I hate the tuning bible :( You have to filter through so much crap before you get any advice on how to tune well.

Dave's video is great.

Unless you got ultra cheap drums warping rims is a VERY bad thing. Means you are cranking waaaaay too tight. Gotta let those babies sing!

Wow,Bending the hoops?

I have one of my snares tuned majorly tight and I have never managed to bend the hoops.Crank it back down man,Tune that thing about middle of the roadish and it will be fine,My slingerland snare rings like a mofo tuned like that, sounds like it could peirce a tank.I cant imagine your going for anything more than that.

Long story short, dont tune so tightly
