What kind of music is this?

It's called "Come wander with me". It was composed by Jeff Alexander, and sung by Bonnie Beecher for an episode of The Twilight Zone of the same title.

It's a creepy and beautiful melody, with a simple guitar part. It's meant to be an Appalachian folk song, but I live in the heart of the Kentucky Appalachians, and I've never heard anything quite like this.

What kind of music is this? And does anyone know of similar songs?

It's more like country western and classic pop with a touch of jazz. Nancy Sinatra comes to mind.

When I first heard this song, the first thing I thought of was an African American gospel, like you hear from the days of slavery. But I haven't heard but a handful of those kinds of songs, and this song is distinctly different than what I've heard.

I checked out Nancy Sinatra, and perhaps I'm looking at the wrong albums, because I can't see much semblance to her, or any other country I've heard.

Yeah, this is nothing like Nancy Sinatra. It's just folk, really. If you want some more of this, the British folk singers of the 60s might be a nice place to look. Many attempted a synthesis of both American and English folk forms, which often resulted in a very sparse, melancholic sound. Vashti Bunyan, comes to mind, she's sprung back into popularity recently although her stuff is a little more ornate than this. Also, Linda Thompson, especially her work with ex-husband Richard (try the song "The Great Valerio"). Linda Perhacs, perhaps.

There are also artists today who have kinda revived the sparse folk sound. Nina Nastasia might be one although her latest album is much louder than this kinda stuff. There's probably plenty others. Honestly, I like this stuff sometimes but it wears me down too much to really dive into. I know there are other folks around who dig, though.
