Thanks, Jom.

I was too scared to do anything.

Jom

Let me explain why, first of all:

On a forum of this magnitude, threads that exceed an X amount of posts/pages lag the forums as a whole down pretty significantly. I was perfectly fine with your guys's community shindig, but I just wanted to let you guys know as the peaceful moderator that some moderators will come in and straight-up delete massive threads without giving as much as a warning. So, this is why I had my little preamble warning thingmajig.

I was also sympathetic with your community deal you've got going on here, and when Classifieds went down, you got moved to GD and that was probably the worst place your thread could go to. Thus, this is why I moved it to this forum (it's the least-active of the remaining forums, and will hopefully not have too much GD-esque traffic/posts in here).

If you guys have any questions/suggestions for me, feel free to drop me a line in the For the Mods thread in the Sputnikmusic Community forum; alternatively, my e-mail is in the bio section of my profile.

I apologize sincerely for any inconveniences, but I hope that this solution/forum works out the best for you all.

EDIT: lol @ people posting before I can get this out :o

Tossy! Holy crap, I didn't know you were still around. How've you been?

Wish, you probably have a better idea as to why the large threads need to be closed/re-started every so often. I vaguely know the reasons why, but you're more in-tune with vBulletin/the Internet/computers than I ever will be, so if I was amiss in my explanations, you can set me straight, or just bring back the first UK thread. I just don't want ebe to come in here and delete that thread for no reason like he did with the whole R&M thing a few weeks ago.

And does this thread REALLY need a sticky? I mean, I'll do it or Wish will do it, but the whole point of putting this in a low-traffic forum was so you guys don't have to search very far for it!

The bigger the thread, the more processing done.

But yeah, I don't see why it needs to be stickied. The last one wasn't for ages before it was moved. Anyway, it's not like it will moved far down the page, and there's a chance it'll have the last post when one is looking at the forum index. But if people reallllly want it stuck, I'm sure something could get worked out.

The bigger the thread, the more processing done.

I still dont understand that, as I said in the old thread. When you click a thread link, it sends a request looking for post ID's, and then sends the information back. Its no different than the first page of any other thread.

Unless vBulletin is oddly organised...

Wish
08-27-2007, 03:27 PM
vBulletin has to count the total amount of posts allocated to the threadid before it can continue, then divide the total by 5/10/20/30/40 posts per page, then display the page. That can takes a lot of memory. All of this while other threads and details are being called from MySQL.

I sort of see what you're saying, but the query wont go to post #1 if it doesnt need it. Your posts-per-page preference will be sent, and the server will say "ok, i'll get the following posts

#539
#540
#541
#542"

etc

It wont bother with #538 and earlier, because there is no need. It will just leave the whole network feeling suicidal

Exactly.

If something is really that complicated that it'd take forever to figure out, I'm fine with just assuming it'll work, and if it doesn't, someone will fix it.

Though this isn't a great strategy really..'Cause if everyone does the same thing, we're ****ed....

I'm the same way pretty much man.

I really dunno' though.

I'm an atheist, but at the same time, I have a tendency to believe everything is going to work out fine. Not by some force of god or a higher power, but just because I believe it will.

As for Gladiator, I don't much like that movie.

I'm entirely sure that I'm using spirituality and fate as an emotional crutch, but I'm entirely fine with that and am too apathetic to do anything to counter it.

It was totally the worst.

I talked to my dad, who was at work, for about 2 minutes.

Then he left, and like 5 minutes later I was like......Ohh ****..MY DAD'S NOT EVEN HOME

It was possibly the worst experience ever, because I could have sworn he had walked into the living room and stood there talking to me.

But it's over now, or at least all the really awful ****. My mum's trying to get me to go to the doctor, but **** that :p

I went to West Wales recently, the gower 'n that, for a camping trip. And there I was, getting quietly drunk in my tent, when a strange middle aged man pops his head round the tent flap and declares:

"Hello there, we're going down the beach and we're wondering whether you'd join us. I've got wood and an axe and any drugs are welcome"

Needless to say, I didn't go out of my way to look for him that evening.

But I miss the times were I could go out and play football for hours at the park with my mates and not drink or play games at my mates and not drink. Drinking in the last year has also sort of put me in a really bad state physically which I'm slowly but surely reversing.

Rapping is just something used when MCing, there is no genre that could be described as rap. Its just a verb.

However, the word is a vital and definitive part of the genre of hip hop; the word has become inseparable from its application.

Therefore, to invoke the idea or concept or activity of rap, one is referring to hip hop.

Grohlthegreat

The two are intertwined to the extent that to talk of one immediately evokes the other.

Since rap is not a genre, you can't refer to something as a 'rap song' therefore, in that context, rap becomes a synonym for hip hop (in a broad sense of the word)

So it isn't possible to like one part of hip-hop (eg the beats or graffiti) without liking rap?

Surf

Yes, but this is just getting into semantics.

What I'm trying to get at (in a terribly roundabout fashion - sorry) is that the word rap and the word hip hop have melded in a cultural context.

In people's heads, the two are one and the same. People refer to rap when they mean hip hop etc etc. So, etymologically, the words have become a synonym.

That's not to say that they are exactly the same, but when talked about in a musical context, they refer to the same thing, at least in a broader sense. And seeing as the scope of hip hop is massive, the broader sense is worth taking into account.

As for Metal...A lot of Metal sucks horribly. But there is A LOT of it that's amazing. It all depends what you're into though. I find Death Metal is the worst music ever, unless you get lucky, and find a decent song. To be honest, some of Cradle Of Filth is actually half decent.

Some metal is just amazing. Symphony X is one of the best bands ever. I'm just getting into Porcupine Tree, and they're pretty damn good. Tool are also great to listen to. There's so much out there it would take me a year to list it all.

WToT, Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker are NOT hilarious together.

There's only so many "I'm black, you're chinese" jokes I can take. Zero. I can take zero of them.

I think theyre soul-less, superficial and really vapid.

Symphony X hasn't really grown on me. I've downloaded two of their albums, and it's alright, somewhat..But just when I'm getting into it, I'll find something on the track that ruins it.

Porcupine Tree are pretty decent, but not really dark enough for me.

Tool are quite good, but again, sometimes they're just awful.

Porcupine Tree are the only aforementioned band I enjoy. Not saying the others suck though.

I've never much heard any Tom Waits.

I like my metal to tell these sweet stories, or just stuff that totally intrigues me, or takes stuff from History, or has a strong symphonic feel to it.

I've only heard Blank Planet really. I'm gonna download some more of their stuff soon.

What Sym X albums did you download? There's a couple I wouldn't recommend to newcomers. To be honest for a newcomer I'd say listen to Paradise Lost and Divine Wings of Tragedy.

So you guys hate Explosions, and God is an Astronaut eh? Ah well, from what I can gather most of you guys don't smoke, and that's where these guys come into their own, some of the emotion they manage to put into their music is ridiculous, it almost brings a tear to my eyes sometimes.

Went out to blow some cash.
Then went to a chinese buffet restaurant.
Then saw some relatives and that.
It was all good apart from seeing relatives, but still. A few hours of enduring them is much worth the money they give you haha.

Nah man, I love explosions. But you may be right about the smoking. I remember the first time I heard Sigur Ros. I was on certain chemicals of the class A variety and it just seemed to slide perfectly into my world.

But I still listen to them when I'm stone cold sober, so they (and most post rock) have really stuck with me.
