im pretty sure they're the same thing actually. heavy metal is the original name, and then it was shortened to metal. like progressive and prog.

If you're just getting into thrash, try Persistence of Time by Anthrax or Ride the Lightning by Metallica. But if you just want MORE thrash than you already have, try some Heathen, Forbidden, Testament, Sepultura... some are harder to find than others; keep that in mind.
