Basically that video is "blah blah blah". I thought of every point he made when I was 11. Nobody really gets upset over cussing anymore, because hardly anyone doesn't cuss.

"Cuss" should be considered a profanity. Such a horribly awkward word.

I live in the bible belt, and was scolded today for saying the word "gay".

I didn't even use it in a derogatory manner.

Also, speaking the word "****" is grounds for suspension in some local schools.

Lol, yeah. I've lived in the south my whole life, and it's the only word I've ever really used for the action of using profanity.

How is "curse"?

It is for a lot of schools actually. Just depends on who the student is.

Even if I agree with him for the most part, he's still annoying.

I've taught myself not to swear out loud at all. But it was more of a subconcious learning than an active thing :). It just seems uncivilized and uneloquent; I don't pass judgement on those who do swear, though.

****, ineloquent and uncivilized? Curse words would not exist without civilization! Was Tarzan ever scolded for grunting a certain way? You can guarantee he was not! And, there is nothing more eloquent than summing up your anger with one word rather than yelling "I am mad!"

Hm?

Listen, if you will slap me in the face and pinch my bones, you should explain to me why. Anyways, you are absolutely wrong on any count, no matter what your explanations will be! Whatever your intentions, I will disagree and say that I did not try hard enough, at whatever I may have been doing.

this:

it tries to be so masculine in nature, but it fails miserably.

Well, as someone who knows my nature, and the nature of what I write better than you do, I completely disagree.

Masculine isn't the right word, really.

Bombastic, superfluous, pompous, inflated, ostentatious, all would have been accepted.

that was fairly meh

and as an essay, it was TERRIBLE...but as a rant just meh

although there are some good points about people in the media being sued for using offensive language, in general he just seemed excited to be swearing on the web. If he was defending absolute free speech then id be allowed to say some well dodgy things about his nationality, of which im sure he wouldnt approve, but if your going to defend words that are offensive to some people then you cant really exclude those offensive to others.

from a social perspective, irrelevant of how we may feel about swearing, the majority of the populous regards frequent swearing as common, uncivilised, and uncouth. walk into a job interview and throw in a few choice swear words and you wont be getting the job. swear to a customer and you may get fired etc etc. unfortunately, some people cant seem to STOP swearing, having been brought up in an environment where its always been allowed, or even encouraged.

and lastly - overuse of profanity takes its power away. were practically left with one taboo word nowadays (begins with C and rymes with bunt) and even thats seeing more and more use. we could invent new profanities to replace the ones we have, but sadly theres a long and powerful history behind the naughty language we have today. if swearing loses its power, we lose an important part of language, the ability to express EXTREME emotion, and to shock

Who really cares about swearing? There are so many bigger issues out there.

I must admit, I have recently adopted the habit of saying "fuc'ken" instead of "um", when pausing for thought. Which caused a problem when I delivered my uni tutorial the other day and I lost my train of though.
