Sigh - Hangman's Hymn

Awesome choir-black-death-thrash metal.

I heard a track off Hangman's Hymn and couldn't stand it. It just seemed so cheesy and superficial, even though they're supposed to be the complete opposite from what I've read on them.

Anyway, Boris are the only band I've heard from that list, although the Boredoms, Ghost and Michio Kurihara have been on my wishlist for a while now. I'm gonna get a Boredoms album now, I think.

Yeah. Sigh is terrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrible.

They're undoubtedly cheesy, but I like that about them. They're meant to be taken seriously, but what with all the Latin and stupid stuff they don't make it easy to do that. I've only heard Hangman's Hymn though, so I don't know how all the other stuff is. They're like Dragonforce or Cradle of Filth (not that I particularly like either of them).

Ghost
Boredoms
Boris
Michio K

All are among current favorites. I'm also into Mono, I wasn't even aware that they were Japanese.

Seadrum by Boredoms is a really great piece. Acid Mothers Temple is fun if you like washes of noise, and they're great live. They used a theremin when I saw them at the Troubadour in LA!

Last I listened to Ghost, I was hearing Hypnotic Underworld and thought they were unfocused beyond listenability. I heard they put out a new album, how is it?

Tsu Shi Ma Mi Re is really great if you don't mind a little cutesy punky skaness mixed in with your jrock.

Asobi Seksu is ace shoegaze.

Adachi Tomomi Royal Chorus is avant garde acappella and is also the ****.

Afrirampo, you have to hear to believe. Amazing live.

I see lots of Boris but little/no Merzbow! The two have collaborated a few times and the results have been highly sexy.

Then there's Buffalo Daughter, Cibo Matto for stuff that's poppier but still absolutely weird.

Man, I could go on for hours.

Ikue Mori, Yoshimi and Yuka, Tenniscoats, Seagull Screaming Kiss Her Kiss Her, Otomo Yoshihide, Number Girl, Nikaido Kazumi, Mori Chieko, Keiji Haino and Yoshida Tatsuya, Kahimi Karie, Green Milk from the Planet Orange, Takako Minekawa...

The new Ghost is great. I haven't listened to HU much, but I would say that each song off of In Stormy Nights is very cohesive. The album itself is 'diverse' in it's style, going from a European freak folk song to a 20 minute drone orgasm to something that could have been part of the Star Wars soundtrack, etc..but it's a great listen nonetheless.

I tried downloading some Acid Mothers Temple but the link was broken. I'll trade you In Stormy Nights for some AMT if you want.

Last I listened to Ghost, I was hearing Hypnotic Underworld and thought they were unfocused beyond listenability. I heard they put out a new album, how is it? What? They may experiment with different styles, but their music definitely isn't unfocused. Especially on HU.

I've been listening to stuff like Nagisa Ni Te and Sachiko Kanenobu lately. Sort of pop/folky stuff with a bit of psychedelic tinge.

Sweet. I've been looking into Keijo Haino's billions of releases. Aiyiho is kinda neat, "Why the Two of Us Here," is badassedness distilled into song form.

I'd rather listen to traditional style japanese music.

I have trouble relating to a lot of the Japanese stuff I've heard. And that has nothing to do with a language barrier. Cultural barrier, maybe.

Kage
09-27-2007, 04:19 PM
That's interesting, because the very reason I've fallen in love with a lot of Japanese music is because it seems to transcend that cultural barrier. It's there, but when I listen to the music it doesn't matter.
