View Full Version : Musical moments that raise the hair on your neck!

What are some musical moments/songs/albums that give you chills when you hear them?

For me, in Amon Amarth's "Runes to My Memory," the chorus, where the guitarist plays the higher notes over the chords (I wouldn't call it a solo), it just fits together so well. Definition of epic.

How bout you guys?

Clichéd, I know, but the climax of the second solo in Comfortably Numb always gets me. Also, when the tubular bells come in halfway through Far Above The Clouds, my neck hairs are well and truly galvanised.

Like whenever there is a brief break in any song, and it just all comes back suddenly with all intensity.

Seriously that stuff just get's me.

Example:
Intro to Descending- LoG (one of my favorites)
On the new BTBAM album 3:13 into Decade of Statues

I havn't had one for a while.

Jeff Buckley's Last Goodbye used to give me it when his voice goes really high just before "Did you say, oh this can't happen to me"

Pretty much any Buckley voice climax is amazing.

Anathema - Alternative 4 .. starting about 3:35 when it goes quiet, but especially when words are spoken during that bit, creeps me the **** out.

Peccatum - Stillness .. the creepy bits, which is most of it

Arcturus - For To End Yet Again 6:25 when the quiet is smashed by the sudden return of the drums and guitars

The Streets - Blinded By The Lights .. about 2:50, after he takes the 2nd pill and feels it starting to work, this synth wave passes over, then the ride cymbals a few seconds later.. brilliant

The Dresden Dolls - Slide .. 3:20 to the massive buildup

Rumors Of The Big Wave - Burning Times .. the chanting at 2:13

When Marco Hietala sings anything. Especially High Hopes and Follow the Blind (the laughing just gives me chills).

In Flames guitar work (old stuff) gets to me too, songs like Resin, Jotun, Jester Script Transfigured, Swim, I could go on and on.

Lastly Nightwish's Poet and the Pendulum, especially the about 1.20 mark when the orchestra kicks in, until the part where Annete starts singing. That orchestration is the definition of epic right there.

The part around 1:10 with the sounds just building up with all the higher pitched effects.

Meshuggah - Straws Pulled At Random
The guitar solo, and the parts leading up to it. Really ethereal sounding, and manages to sound emotional even with all the distorted guitars and china riding behind it.

The metal-esque portion of Non-Objective Portrait Of Karma by Circle Takes The Square is awesome.

Also, Wormwood Radiation, by Ampere:
But there is life here, you can hear it in the soil
You can see it in the shadows, etched into stone
I swear that there is life here, i can hear it in the soil
I can feel it in the shadows, etched in the stone: there is life here!

That part's real cool.

Vintersorg - Isjungfrun great female vocals with a great groove or whatever.
In Flames - Everlost Part 2 awesome female singing.

I had one this morning while listening to Jethro Tulls "A Christmas Song". It was mostly the lyrics, but I think the music itself made them that much more "real", for a lack of a better term
