what are your opinions on women in the metal genres?
Dimmu Burger

Light This City is the shiznit. There are a lot of female singers in Goth Rock/Metal bands and they all can sing very well, but its pretty boring IMO. Otep is wierd. Arch Enemy owns. Wicked Wisdom is a joke. The end.

In This Moment, her screams are kinda bad but her singing voice is great. Arch Enemy owns, Walls of Jericho are ok, lacuna coil used to be good. female vocals dont really bother me in metal. i dont like the female gothic vocals that much though. chicks in indie/folk bands kinda bore me

its only the vocals that bother me, like when sufjan stevens or the decemberists add female vocals it sometimes bugs me. their vocals arent bad i just can enjoy it. but in metal i like female clean vocals a lot (except for in goth metal like i said). if a female plays in instrument, thats kick ***

Metal is a vehicle for men to show off how big their **** is, of course females need not be included.
Except for Angela Gossow, she might even have something on Dargon.

I don't really care one way or the other, so long as they can do whatever they're doing, and do it well.
Bolt Thrower and Boris, for example, are both excellent. Vocals would be the only sticking point for me, I think (and with exceptions, obviously; The River spring to mind).

this is basically how i feel. women try way too hard to fit into the genre, so they end up just being extremely macho/dyke looking. i just dont feel that they are being truthful to themselves or their fans by even being in a metal band.

Most female vocals are ruined by the band.
Example: Aghora.
...Except Aghora's self titled, which was awesome. :) I agree about Formless, although TBH I didn't really like her vocals, either. That band sorta blows without Malone.
Anyways, there are quite alot of female metal vocalists that I like alot more than male vocalists. IMO the soprano (or mezzo) range that alot of women in metal have sounds about 100x better sung by a woman than a man. The vocals are the main reason why I can't stand most male-fronted power metal bands...it just sounds cheesy. Someone like Floor Jansen could easily blow any of those castrati pansies out of the water. There are a few decent male metal vocalists who sing high...Dickinson, Russell Allen, etc...but most of them suck. Why so many pig-headed metalheads fail to recognize this and say that women shouldn't be in metal is beyond me.
Dr. Jake Destructo
08-18-2007, 07:57 PM
well just in case you're being foolishly sarcastic, my point is this- Females make a much greater contribution to what we're calling indie than females in metal. Typically in metal, it seems like the girl is there just as a gimmick(yes, vocals are a gimmick tbh), whereas there are a lot of female led groups that would fall under the indie umbrella.
and indie girlies are cute and not obese with black fingernail polish and fishnet tops.
Det_Nosnip
08-18-2007, 08:02 PM
Actually, no. The "gimmick" wore off years ago...the only people who see it as a gimmick are those who aren't exposed to it. Women have been in metal for years...
Either way, I really don't see your point, Jake. What does pretentious indie music have to do with women in metal? The thread topic wasn't "what do you think of women in any genre of music ever formed," nor was it "who has the bigger ****, metal or indie?" It was "what do you think of women in metal?"
Stay on topic.

Well, there have been numerous excellent, heavy metal bands with females on instruments.
I'm not too thrilled about the idea of females doing anything but clean vocals, however.
While some girls can compare to men at a brutal vocal style (in bands such as Bloodlined Caligraphy, and NOT Wicked Wisdom), but overall I just like the sound of females attempting vocals that aren't clean.
Sorry if that's sexist, but it's my opinion.

Joanna Newsom is god awful. Let us not entertain any notion that she is otherwise.
But, for the topic at hand, I don't see why it matters. If a band doesn't sound good, they aren't doing something right, regardless of what set of genitals are present.
edit: not to mention I would prefer any female growling fifty straight minutes through an album than to see another 80 pound frontchick in some Flyleaf wannabe band find their way onto the radio so they can claim to be hardcore just because the guitarist found their way to the right side of his distortion pedal and stuck with it because that merits metal. /rant

You were talking about indie music for no reason!
My opinion on women in metal is that they are less important to the genre than they are in indie.
...And my point is that your point is irrelevant to this thread. :) That would be like you talking about saxophones in indie music and me coming in and saying that saxophones are more important in jazz...or me talking about clarinets in jazz and you coming in and pointing out how the clarinet has a longer standing position in classical/orchestral music.
Is it a crime to bring other genres into this thread? If so, I might as well leave before if you choose to be a prude about that rule, then this forum is more laughable than I thought.

You are hilariously clueless, it's almost unbelievable.
Get a grip, really. :-/
EDIT: Nah, I'll let you live in your little fantasy world where nothing really makes sense to you and sarcasm is nonexistent.
Yeah, I really believe that heavy metal is about throwing an empty beer bottle at a woman's face; and and then continuing to chuck my balls around, before finishing the whole event off with some Satan hailing.
Infact I am so affirmed in this believe that I even ignore great bands like Electric Wizard just because they have a female member.
It's all entirely true.
It tends to be very difficult to detect your sarcasm at times. But whatever.

Has anyone mentioned Julie from Battle Of Mice and Made Out Of Babies yet? Not strictly metal, but she's by far my favorite female vocalist the best I've heard imo.
There's nothing quite like her voice.

I don't see how lyrics have any relevance on vocal talent.

I was talking more about the vocal talent. From what I've heard of her, it's just her kind of screeching on and on over some music.

Hmmm well her work in Made Out Of Babies does at times seem random and I think that she improvises some of it. Admittedly it's not her best work. But her performance in Battle Of Mice is nothing short of brilliant.

I really like the new heavy gothic style stuff with operatic female vocals and some growls like Sirenia,Orpanage,Trail Of Tears,Leaves Eyes and a little known Russian band I reviewed named The Aerium, about as "operatic" metal as you can get.Blame me ,its my fault,I asked for this stuff silently a long time ago and lo and behold along comes Celtic Frost with sultry kind of vox on a couple of tracks and then Paradise Lost with actual operatic vox.IMO these women sound totally cool behind heavy riffs, especially doom style music.

They need to get off of movie soundtracks...all of them. It gives alot of those bands a very "samey" quality, particularly regarding their orchestrations. I feel like Symphony X has the same problem. Compare that to some of the stuff that Ihsahn has done with Emperor, even 10 years ago...no contest. :)

As far as female vocals go, I'm cool with it... but there's something thats been bothering me about it recently. For one thing, it seems like a really big trend to have a female vocalist, and really, to me it just seems like a way to grab horny, sexually-deprived young boys attention. Like, "Oh, this band's singer is so hot! I'm gonna check 'em out!" I don't know... when it comes to "Hottest Chicks In Metal Tour" I just see it as a nice little package that easily digestible for starving-for-chicks bandwagon jumpers. What's next? "The Coolest Hair In Metal Tour"?

female fronted bands are cool.. somehow they just add that extra flavour and texture into the music.. esp with beauty and the beast singing.. it just adds another dimension to the music..
what i dont understand are bands that are neither female fronted nor all-female. Instead they have themselves a female drummer/ keyboardist.. those seem to serve no purpose at all other than to draw the horny crowd..
philly96
09-12-2007, 09:33 AM
I slightly agree with that statement however, I think people just come to the conclusion too quickly that its just to pull in the horny children. They may have been picked due to their playing and sex shouldnt really play a part. I know that it does and it cant be changed but people should judge them on the music not just what they look like. Stage presences plays a part in how they are interpreted and having a female member could be good for the exposure and stuff.

Accept when their actually good at playing their instuments. Who cares if someone is male or female. The bassplayer for Bolt Thrower has been a woman for as long as the band has existed (about 20 year or more), she certainly wasn't chosen for her looks (not that she's a world class bassplayer either) but she does fit the band. So why would they take a man instead?
