Soulside Journey is a good album, however i am listening to Graveyard Slut, Whiskey Funeral and Shut Up off of The Cult Is Alive, what a difference 15 years makes.
Talk Darkthrone.

Darkthrone are the quintessential Black Metal band.

Their most recent sounds more like some kind of bastardized hardcore/punk group. I have no idea what is in between.
Darkthrone are the quintessential Black Metal band.
I've mentioned them to several people in BM circles before and they seem to think of them not a tr00 band, apart from their first few releases. I haven't listened to anything but the first and a sample of the last.

I heard one of their newer songs, "Canadian Metal" off the "New Wave of Black Heavy Metal" (wtf) EP last night and thought it was incredibly stupid. I'm not even going to bother explaining why.
But yeah, pretty much all the albums Retired listed are great. The rest is..meh, ok.

But at the same time, it's cool because they still pretty much don't give a **** what anyone thinks about them.

Canadian Metal is badass because of the fact it's pure name dropping. Everything that song mentions kicks ***.
I dont mind the new Darkthrone, in fact I'll probably really enjoy the new album for what it is. They've conquered "true" black metal, they did it over 13 years ago. Now they're just paying tribute to their favourite bands and influences. They did the crust **** on Cult is Alive and now they're doing the Thrash/Heavy **** on the new ****. ****

I listened to A Blaze In The Northern Sky today, i dunno how i feel about it.
It's very different to Soulside Journey in production, but seems to have a lot more varied and complex arrangements. I dig the razor thin guitar tones for some reason.

Keep "digging it". Dig and dig until you exhume a rotten filthy corpse.
ABITNS was the first ever BM cd given to me, and it was the one that eventually clicked with me and forced me to delve further into the genre that I now hold so dearly.

Euronymous called Soulside Journey a black metal album because it featured some black-metal esque lyrics/ideals. or something like that. its in an interview with him, but he refused to call it death metal.

Who gives a **** what Euronymous says? It's still death metal. Doesn't matter if the lyrics are "black-metal esque" because that's certainly not the only death metal to have lyrics in that vein.
