Sadly, I disagree with you. Although Mahavishnu's later stuff was extremely different, it was equally awesome.

I'm not really familiar with the post-trident mahavishnu but I mean it's McLaughlin how could it possibly be bad

Well judging by the overall philosophy that concieved the inner mounting flame they changed for the worse. They had clever interplay and concepts that were much more sophisticated than Mclaughlin's ideas on later albums.
