Special Brew

i want to find music that sounds like it would be medieval and whatnot. stuff with like bards, lutes, and wood flutes, etc. not really rock or metal, but i don't know where else to ask and i figure some of you that are into powermetal would know of something like what i want. the kind of music you'd hear at a ren fair or something.

rough description but i suck at that sort of thing.

Bach's lute suites would be the best place to start. Some classical guitar composers: Sor, Tarrega maybe. I dunno, I'm not really into the music but I've learned some pieces over the years.

thanks but i'm hoping to luck into groups, not solitary players. i know plenty of classical guitarists and a few lutenists to last a lifetime since i was really into that stuff for a couple o' years

i'd go to ren fairs but unfortunately i'm extremely poor and there are none near the places i live unless i travel

lol.

You're not actually going to find a whole lot of Medieval stuff, and none of it will be in any ways affiliated with Swedish death metal. There's actually very little music that has survived from the Medieval time period...most of the early stuff that we have is this:
http://www.amazon.com/Chant-Gregorian/dp/B000002SKX

The period that most people seem to associate with "Medieval" music would be either Renaissance (also a limited available repertoire) or Baroque (Bach, Handel, etc).

yeah i'm not looking for actual pieces from then, just groups that perform that style of music or something similar.

Well, if somebody said they were looking for "rock music" and had something like Cannibal Corpse in mind, one would expect them to be at least somewhat particular with the genre, yes?

 I love how, on MX, we have pyro-necro-bestial-post-thrash-folk metal, and yet anything written before the 20th century is either "Classical" or "Medieval."

Riva

Well, he was a bit vague but most people knew what he meant. If he had been looking for actual pieces from that time period, one would expect him to specify baroque, romance, gothic, minstrel, etc, but he was just looking for the sound.

Also, there's a lot more music that uses "medieval" song structure and instruments than people think. It's just that most of the central and western European music from that time period has been supplanted by modern music.

I consider it synonymous with the Dark or Middle Ages.

I don't quite get how a genre of music can sound like a time period.

Is there a genre of music called "Renaissance?"

I'm suggesting that you have centipedes in your vagina right now. Your little crow of victory over successfully pointing out that he needs to be more specific wasn't necessary in the least. In addition, whilst we can clearly see that Agalloch isn't medieval or anything more than standard folk/progressive metal, you didn't need to leave a snide comment either.

The debate raging right now is that the term Medieval isn't specific enough. See the suggestions by myself involving both bands that incorporate a "minstrel" style of songwriting into their music, and also another artist, Raushan Orzabaeva, who plays truly Medieval music, in that it originates from the Middle Ages and is played on a traditional Kazakhstani instrument.

No, but I am trying to return decency to R&M, one shred at a time, and when moderators like you and Tojes come in and **** all over it, I get pissed off. Tojes has come good, now I'm asking you to do the same. We can all agree this topic is a lost cause, there's no need to start flaming. In the other thread, Jake was perfectly right to continue talking about women in indie compared to metal since it was the threadstarter himself who admitted he preferred them in indie. See my point?

How is talking about Joanna Newsom in a metal thread NOT derailing the topic?

Riva
08-18-2007, 10:18 PM
The topic was already derailed. A good thread should be organic, and flow with the topic changes, as long as it still relates back to previous discussion. But in any case I'm not going to argue about it in this thread anymore.

A good example also would be two albums by Satyricon, "Dark Medieval Times" and "The Shadowthrone" which both have many passages of medieval music with acoustic guitar lutes and flutes.

Not that you asked but if you want to be able to play medieval music on guitar, similiar to what would be played on lutes, youl have to learn polyphonic scales, which you can gather using google.

Someone said something about "minstrel" music, and I'm thinking this is probably the right term for what I'm looking for. But this type of music seems to span centuries, if wikipedia is to be trusted on the subject. I don't know where to start looking for music in that style.

I took classical guitar for almost two years, and didn't learn a damn thing outside of a handful of pieces. I wish my teacher actually taught me how to write the music.
