View Full Version : 4 Piece Metal Bands with Singer Guitarists

I kind of find bands with singer guitarists more listenable, so I thought we could make a list.

Metallica
Megadeth
Machine Head
Trivium
Opeth
Bullet for my Valentine
Soulfly
Sepultura
Ektomorf

Cant really think of more. Do you have any recommendations?

What difference does it make if the singer plays guitar?

Yeah, what's the point? As long as the music is good, who cares about the composition of the band.

Wierdest thread ever. I can think of lots but whether they're better because the guitarist also sings (or vice versa)? I don't think so.

I would like the OP to explain himself.

meteor_47

The riffs he plays while he sings are different. Because he's got to play guitar and sing.

This makes the songs different compared to a five piece band.

EADG
08-17-2007, 05:13 AM
Yeah

I can see if you prefer bands with 2 guitars

but I don't see why it matters if one of the guitarists is also the singer

Spose "theoretically" the dual player won't be playin fancy stuff while singing

I personally prefer the singer to not play another instrument. It makes it easier for the vocals to be more dynamic and not so syncopated with the music. When my old band got rid of our singer and I became the singer, I chose to not play bass anymore for that very reason.

Yeah I know, and I prefer it the other way round. ;)

Yeah I know, and I prefer it the other way round. ;)

And I respect that. Also when the singer doesn't play another instrument, it can make for a more energetic live show, since he isn't stuck at the same place on the stage the whole time.

And don't you dare bring up headset microphones!!

Would bands with a vocalist who is also a keyboardist/bassist/drummer/whatever be equally appealing to you, threadstarter?

.. I kinda like bands better if they consist of a small amount of people, doing alot.
I guess it's a respect kinda thing..
Even though it shouldn't change the way I view the music, it sometimes does
But then again, bands with less members usually make more consistent music, due to lack of conflicting opinions... I enjoy that sometimes..

.. This post is mildly offtopic

I know what you're getting at, and I can agree.

Seeing a band with 6+ members is offputting for me. I couldn't give you a valid reason as to why, it just does.

Though when I see 3 piece putting out a massive sound, they'll get my full attention as I stand in awe of how they can compose something that seems so captivating never ceases to amaze me.

/also off topic

This is why Mike Oldfield is the greatest musician of all time, amirite?

In any case, for the threadstarter:

Pink Floyd
The Kinks

Actually, no.. The ability to play several instruments doesn't really impress me at all.
It's when they do it at the same time that I get interested :p

Hypocrisy. Although Tagtgren's (how the **** DO YOU SPELL HIS NAME) guitar riffs aren't all that complicated when he growls.

Evergrey also have a singer guitarist, but they're a 5 piece.

I don't think it influences the song so much. Perhaps you prefer rhythm playing whilst someone sings? idk

This thread is stupid.
The singer/guitarist plays the same stuff as the other guitarist 99% of the time.
Hetfield's rhythm is the same as Hammet's, and Metallica would sound the same if Hetfield was just singing anyway.
But...
Machine Head
Necrophagist
SEPULTURA
DEATH
Pestilence
ATHEIST

Listen to bands like Killswitch Engage.

The guitars and the vocals do kind of different melodies. These stuff are not really easy to play and sing at the same time.

On the other hand, Metallica's stuff are easier to play and sing. Its not that Metallica's riff are bad, its just built differently..

Still dont agree there is a difference between bands with singer/guitarist and bands with no instrument singers?

The reason why Het gets props for singing and playing is because a lot of things he does rythmically on guitar will differ from the pattern of his vocals. i.e Disposable Heroes

Well hearing is a bit hard. But if you give me the tabs i can tell you. (provided its recorded live or something i.e he hasnt added any aditional guitar tracks)

Hmmm....If you can't do it by hearing it, then you're not getting the million bucks. And I don't see how you can figure it out with tabs but not by listening.

Because I am a singer guitarist and these things make a difference. You might notice no difference in the music but if you learn to play those songs and you sing it you will understand my point. There are songs that you can play the guitar parts and do the vocals separately, but doing them at the same time is difficult.

You can play anything while singing anything else on top of it. It just takes practice.

Shattered_Future

Yeah, it's quite hard to do it, but it can be done.

I can do like power chord passages while singing in a crappy voice, but I can't sing while playing technical stuff.

Then again, I can't sing very well at all, so maybe I should just play guitar.

MetalSpine

Ben Burnley from Breaking Benjamin sings and plays guitar. They were classed as alternative metal but I don't know. more hard rock i'd say :S
