Since it's been about 50 years since jazz has largely lost its popularity, people have had a chance to sort of work out what the classics are. A google search probably wouldn't get you very different answers to this question than what you'll get here.
I can put together a "Jazz starter kit" for you, but to be honest it will be as bad as the other 99.999% Jazz starter kits. There's no right or wrong way to get into jazz and there is so much work out there that is great that people don't listen to. It will be 20 jazz albums, some popular, some obscure.
The list:
1. Oliver Nelson - Blues & The Abstract Truth
2. Charles Mingus - Blues & Roots
3. Miles Davis - Kind of Blue
4. John Coltrane - My Favorite Things
5. Jimmy Smith - The Sermon!
6. Eric Dolphy - Live at the Five Spot vol. 2
7. Sonny Rollins - Sonny Rollins, Vol. 2
8. Andrew Hill - Verona Rag
9. Chico Hamilton - The Dealer
10. Joseph Jarman - Song For
11. Thelonius Monk - Monk's Dream
12. Yusef Lateef - The Blue Yusef Lateef
13. Wayne Shorter - Adam's Apple
14. Tom Scott - Born Again
15. Duke Ellington - ... and his mother called him bill
16. Gonzalo Rubalcaba - Discovery - Live at Montreux
17. Cannonball Adderley - Nippon Soul
18. Chris Potter - Gratitude
19. Charles Lloyd - Forest Flower - At Monterey
20. Prince Lasha With Sonny Simmons - Firebirds
It will take a while to upload, probably won't be up until tomorrow.

If your new to jazz, theres so many sub genres out there but I guess a good place to start would be
Miles Davis - Kind of Blue thats a good place to start, with Modal Jazz and such.
Theres alot of stuff to get into Coltrane,Parker,Mingus,Ellinghton,Shorter,Brecker etc etc
The best way is to sample from a majority of the jazz sub genres and find which ones you like, and the artists in them.
Charlie Hunter is great.
8 string guitar virtouso. He mixes jazz, funk and rock. You can download songs from hiw website.
Also, get a Best of django reinhardt cd. Django fused swingjazz with bluegrass, classical and gypsymusic. really great guitarist.

The hell are you talking about? Django Reinhardt has absolutely nothing to do with bluegrass or classical. never tell anyone this ever again.
