Breakdowns are usually frowned upon on mx, dude. I have mixed things about them and only like them if they don't feel so contrived in trying to be 'heavy'.
Converge's 'Heartless' has a great breakdown though, check that one out.

You know why I said **** off and die? Because I meant it.
If you're coming in looking purely for breakdowns chances are you're shallow, vain and don't appreciate any actual thought to music. Breakdowns are integral to many-a songs, but writing songs around them depreciates them and breaks dipshits who, conveniently enough, go on hunts for nothing but. So yeah, once again:
**** off and die.

Suffocation.....
I didnt think that just because you slow down in a song meant it was a breakdown.
So what if he does like just only breakdowns coke? Sure it isnt much from a musical standpoint, but maybe it gives him the same feeling that you get when you listen to whatever it is you really enjoy.
Just because you have 15k+ posts doesnt make you better than others.

I didnt think that just because you slow down in a song meant it was a breakdown.
suffocation's breakdowns aren't chug-chug but they have the same rhythm as a typical breakdown.
and a breakdown is an abrupt switch to half-time.

masscows
08-15-2007, 03:52 PM
explain what it is then, ive been under the impression that a breakdown was just an abrupt shift to half-time. I didnt say half-time=breakdown, i said abrupt shift, but that's probably equally as wrong.
I dont listen to much aside from metal and rock anyway, so i probably wouldnt recognize a jazz breakdown or something if i heard it.
masterchaos
08-15-2007, 03:56 PM
And they way I think of breakdowns is the "chug chug" style riffs...I bet if we all were in room listening to what we each though is a breakdown, we would probably agree with each other.
Cocaine
08-15-2007, 04:02 PM
A breakdown is just a break from the music. It's not unlike a bridge, blablabla. It's mostly half-time but that still doesn't equate it to mindless chugging on a permanent basis.
I have a headache but if you can't recognize breakdowns that arent 'dun dun dududdududchhhhhh" you shouldnt be listening to music.
I'm cranky as well, hence the **** off and dies.
masscows
08-15-2007, 04:05 PM
ive always known breakdowns weren't all chugchug. Nile's Sacrifice Unto Sabek has a little twiddly diddly breakdown in it, for example, although you probably didnt listen to that song after the 20 second mark because you hate that band so much.

Is it considered hXc dancing if I hold the person down and beat the piss out of him?
just kidding.
I just realized that when I play guitar that a fair amount of my riffs could be considered breakdowns...but I guess they would be more of the "Groove" type rather than hardcore. i.e. Suicide Note pt2 chorus

if you want a band that plays breakdowns like bring me the horizon, making an inquiry on myspace would more than likely be more successful than asking here. as shitty as 'as blood runs black' is, their album is still worth a listen. the other bands have all pretty much recently released albums, and they're talented acts. ETID owns. I like their rock and roll inspired riffs. Its about time bands started to emulate ACDC.

You can't be serious.
ACDC is a classic american rock band. There is nothing wrong with a band being inspired by them. Maybe if they straight up copied them that wouldn't be cool, but I don't see whats wrong with what they're doing.

They dont really sound anything like ACDC
"It's about time bands started emulating ACDC"
That's either an extremely ironic statement or just plain foolish

Some of their riffs make it obvious that they are ACDC fans.

Nonono, it makes it obvious that they've jumped on the southern bandwagon.
Also, ACDC is not classic, ACDC is ****ing terrible.

Ah well.
ACDC blows hard, sorry.
This.
I just want to point out the sick intro of Locust Reign by Converge. Worthy of high breakdown status.

Everybody bitches about breakdowns and whether they are good or not, but I really don't give a toss. A breakdown is a breakdown, and they're ****ing awesome. Unless they are weak or too subtle.
To me, the more obvious and generic a breakdown is, the more fun it is.
Although I do laugh hysterically at the second breakdown in Unearth's "This Lying World".

I havent seen them since they got the asian dude.. Jason is it?
anyways, the band has gone on hiatus... due to drummer issues and other such stuff... Devin (guitar) and the singer are touring with a new band. i forget the name... the asian dude and bass player are lookin for a new band though.

Most of those top 10 breakdowns all have the same generic metalcore **** in it.
Not all breakdowns suck. Don't let all these new metalcore bands ruin breakdowns for you.
Converge did a good one in Locust Reign. Uhhh, Botch have a few scattered ones. Poison The Well have great ones. Some hardcore bands have good ones.

Botch have more than 'a few scattered' good breakdowns
I wouldn't really call them breakdowns per se, though...
