View Full Version : Metal Revitalized

A few weeks ago while my brother-in-law was bringing me back from babysitting my niece, he blasted his mix cd of old-school metal (the typical but sweet old Metallica, Pantera, etc...) and I remember him saying "Everything coming out now seems so toned down." This has led me to want to make him a mix cd (or two) of awesome metal that has been released w/in the past few years to show him how it's actually progressed.
I don't know if this kind of thread's against the rules (I read them and I hope it isn't) but I'm asking for help. Judging by what I figure he likes and doesn't like in music, I'm trying to stay away from death metal, black metal, grindcore, doom metal, and (by default) metalcore, and sticking with more in-your-face, anthemic, fist-pumping, shout-along stuff.
So far, I'm considering some Opeth, Nevermore, Symphony X, Strapping Young Lad, Lamb of God, Chimaira (though vocals & lyrics in most songs are a minus, "Implements of Destruction" is in), Dream Theater (Glass Prison live @ Gigantour, Dark Eternal Night), Slayer, Meshuggah ("I", though it may be iffy, I think it's worth a shot), plus a few short transition tracks and solid tracks that can be left out, both for the sake of flow.
If there're more tracks that belong on it, please share. Thanks. :)

Iced Earth
Wintersun
Electric Wizard
I'd show him most of those bands.

Isis/Neurosis/Pelican
this.
On a side note, if he likes old school Metallica and Pantera, etc, I doubt he's going to like Opeth or Isis over a death metal band like Bolt Thrower or Mithras.
Some of my suggestions:
Lost Horizon - Heart Of Storm
Galloglass - Beyond The Mirror
Tarot - I Rule
Therion - Cults Of The Shadow
Skyclad - The Disenchanted Forest
Falconer - Mindtraveller
Mithotyn - In The Sign Of The Ravens
Bolt Thrower - Anti-Tank (Dead Armour)
this.
Why not Neurosis, you ****in noob?

I'm thinking his stereotype comes from like... popular stuff, so he should just be showed varied stuff.
Opeth
Arsis
Mastodon
Between the Buried and Me
The Human Abstract
Into Eternity
Protest the Hero
Unearth
Necrophagist
The Faceless
enjoy.

Why's that? He'd at least dig old Opeth, I guess. :p
**** it, I'll list some recommendations.
Arsis - The Sadistic Motives Behind Bereavement Letters
Merciless - Pure Hate
Destroy Destroy Destroy - Battlecry!
Year of Desolation - Elitist Death Squad

i doubt his brother would like them. Isis is much easier to digest :D
Neurisican is a full package, though. It's all three or bust.

hmmm
Nevermore-Final Product
Immolation-World Agony
Rotting Christ-Sign of Prime Creation
DragonForce-My Spirit Will Go On
In Flames-Jotun
Shadows Fall-The Light That Blinds
Unearth-Sanctity of Brothers
Arsis-Return
Between the Buried and Me-Selkies: The Endless Obsession
None of this should be too heavy for him. Immolation might, but that song is quite a diverse one and Immolation isn't the most brutal death metal band of all time by any means.

they pretty much epitomize power metal's cheesiness. I was gonna pick something by CoB or Blind Guardian but then thought, nahhh, DragonForce is way funnier.
Children Of Boredom doesn't epitomise anything about Power Metal. DragonForce is a good band that just wrote the same song 50 times. They're the AC/DC of Power Metal, if you like.

Wow, I wasn't expecting this kind of a response this fast. I've been working out and playing music and stuff all day so I haven't been near the computer and my niece is sleeping here tonight, so I'm not gonna be able to go over this stuff today, but I appreciate the help.
Btw, I don't think he cares too much for death metal vocals in general, but like Mikael Akerfeldt said in an interview, once he was shown something he really liked musically that had those kind of vocals (forgot the band), he started liking them, and coincidentally, Opeth did that for me, so I'll probably have a song w/ less grunting in it. I was thinking Ghost of Perdition, and I have "Message from a Self-Destructing Turnip" by Porcupine Tree for a short intro before it so it works surprisingly well. :)

Try some Cynic on him, a mix or robot vocals and death growls.

Change of plans, my niece went home.
So far, first disc is (minus transition tracks)
Opeth - Ghost of Perdition
Nevermore - Born
Strapping Young Lad - Skeksis
Dream Theater - The Dark Eternal Night
Symphony X - Domination (unless you have a better suggestion, just a personal fav.)
The first disc is definitely going to end w/ Implements of Destruction by Chimaira.
If I include Meshuggah's I, that's finishing the second disc.
Shadows Fall - The Light That Blinds is sick but I have no clue what happened to my copy of that cd. I'll DL it.
I'm looking for specific songs so just saying artists doesn't help so much.
He likes the good bands that got through to the mainstream, he just hasn't really gotten to check out good underground bands, which is where most of the good stuff is.
Digging in my memory for statements he's made on certain artists...
I was checking out a live Muse vid and he said he thinks they're garbage. Radiohead is one of his favorite bands.
I know he also loves Tool and Rage Against the Machine.
Him and my sister (his wife) don't like System of a Down, but love earlier Mike Patton stuff (up to California w/ Mr. Bungle, pre-Album of the Year FNM)
Just by that, I wouldn't recommend bands that feel like they belong in the underground scene, and feel more like an original idea or have a driving force that hasn't been abused by countless other bands. A fresh breath of air. I want the whole cd to be pure ***-kicking, pant-creaming awesomeness that you can't not get pumped to.
One more note: I brought up Lamb of God and he gave me a thumbs-up. But they obviously have an appeal seperate from most underground bands.
All in all, typical stuff from the radio, and hence, the reason im making this cd. He has good judgement. And a massive drum&bass collection.
Sorry for the huge post. :(
Give him the song Akuma no Uta by Boris for some real metal.

I would recommend some stuff, but I find this thread to be flawed due to the fact that he doesn't like any of the extreme metal genres.
You cannot say that metal has been toned down if you don't listen to(or acknowledge) the extreme metal genres such as death/black etc etc...

It is good. Razor Lives is one of my fav songs along with a good bit of others. Predators Portrait has so much more atmosphere and feeling to it thats why I would should suggest that over anything else. Im sorry all, I dont want to turn this into a Soilwork debate.
