Does a synthesizer need an amp/speaker to work (sort of like an electric guitar) or does it have something built in that is good for quiet practice room volumes?

Generally you need an amp for synthesizers. Digital pianos usually have speakers though.
What are you looking at?

You can use your headphones.

Most things have a headphone jack. You might need a 1/4 to 1/8 converter if your headphones are 1/8 inch, but you can find those at radio shack..

I'm looking at anything to get me started pretty much, that's not too pricey, but isn't ****.

If I can use headphones, does that mean I can direct line out to my computer too?

if your looking for an unexpensive synth for beginners i suggest you look on ebay for a Korg X5D or just plain X5, or if you have a higher budget go for the X50 or the Roland Juno.

I can't find the X5D or the X5 on eBay.ca, and the X50 is wayyy too much here (It was like 875 used I think). I was thinking something along the lines of the Korg Microkorg, or Alesis Micron? Something small is fine, as long as you can switch octaves.

Micron > MicroKorg, the keybed is waaaayyy nicer.

Yeah, Micron is a pretty good choice.
