Alright guys, my laptop is pissing me off.

You see, it keeps just randomly shutting off (Like you were to unplug a normal computer) on me, and then there's intense heat from the fan at the back. I did some checks, and the fan is running fine. The laptop is propped up too so plenty of cool air can reach the fan, and my room is freezing too. I'm not doing anything intense with my laptop either, like running some hardcore games or ****, I'm literally browsing Mx.

Any ideas? I wanna' fix it before the retarded thing powers down on me again, 'cause when it does, I'm probably going to get so pissed I'll toss the damn thing.

well it sounds like its overheating. what processor do you have and do they have a rep for running hot?

i'm not familiar with laptops but can't think of anything else that would cause that kind of heat unless another component is failing to excessive heat

i know some people buy those laptop trays with fans in them to blow air in the laptop to help cool things off. maybe that could help? however if it has never happened before...just kind of makes me go "hmm"

i bet the headsink is clogged with dust, or the entire thing is clogged in general

actually, how much RAM do you have?

I've switched over to running Ubuntu rather than Windows, and it hasn't crashed since, but...

Its clean of dust, totally fine..

And because I'm not that suave with Ubuntu yet, I checked online to see what I have for RAM and it says 959MB.

I've just noticed that the extreme left column space of my monitor seems to be slightly blurry/fuzzy. Any text that happens to be in the area will lose its sharpness slightly.

Anyone have a clue about this?

This is more of a hardware question than a problem really, but I'm looking to buy a high-capacity external hard drive. I've been looking around new egg and pretty much every review is either a 5 ("Great!") or a 1 ("DOA!") so it's hard to chose.

My budget is around $100, but I'm willing to spend a bit more for a great deal.

I'm looking at 500gig hard drives, like this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148354

At the same time I could get the following for a similar price, but 1.5x storage.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148354

I've heard Seagate is the best, and a 5 year warranty sounds great, so that's why those are my top two. I'm looking for opinions/recommendations.

Will a bigger drive decrease the reliability significantly? ie. am I better off with a 500g drive that will last me 2 years than a 640 that will last me 1.5 years (if that's the case, which is what I'm asking.)

Also, how big to usb-powered external hard drives get? That's not really a tag on newegg so I'm heaving trouble with a reliable search. Not having to plug in an external hard drive would be a great convenience. Are these unreliable as well, though?

If this is tl;dr, then to sum up "What's the best external hard drive I can get for around 100-130 dollars that best juggles reliability and price"

Western Digital. I say this because I've been buying WD drives for 5 years, and they've never failed me.

Also, I have an odd problem in Vista. Recently, my "folder.jpg" files have been disappearing from my music folders. It never did this in XP.

I assumed it was maybe putting the image into the ID tags, but all my programs are finding the folder.jpg files, and typing in the "D:\...folder.jpg" into the run bar, even though it doesn't show up in the explorer, shows the image just fine. I don't get it???

Or just buy an internal and get an enclosure.

BridgeToSolace
01-21-2009, 07:11 AM
I looked into that, it's not really any cheaper the first time you do it.

100 dollars for a 500g external hd or 30-40 dollars for a good enclosure and 50-70 for a 500g internal hd.

The very small amount of money I save isn't worth the possibility of me ****ing everything up :p

dont they normally become hidden files so they wont show up in the folders unless you search?

So a co-worker recently gave me her laptop because the person who originally "fixed" it for her royally F'd it up by (somehow) installing XP Pro and XP Home on there. I told her it would be easier for me just to format her hard drive and then re-install XP Home for her (since the disks she gave me were for XP Home).

Was this sound advice, or did I royally F her over, too?
Also: I can just reformat the computer using the recovery console, right?

Thanks for your help in advance.

EDIT: let me clarify: she originally had a virus or something on her computer, so she took it to some dude to get it fixed, he screwed it up, so it would be easier to start from scratch and build it back up, correct?

IgniteYourAvail

Yeah I figured out the problem, windows Media Player apparently has a default option that adds all your media then overwrites your folder.jpg files with smaller ones. Completely ridiculous. The files weren't even hiden, they're "Protected system files", so that's why they were so hidden. Everything's hunky dory now though, except for having to redownload ~150 album covers (luckily I caught it before it got past the 'C's).

I have another nub question, as always.

I'm downloading a torrent of FFVII but I want to burn it onto a few discs and pop it into my PS2 instead of playing it on an emulator, so I downloaded the Alcohol 120% trial version.

Does the burn wizard on the trial version work for burning games, or do I need to download a cracked install of the full version? I don't want to waste any blank CDs.

emulator not working out for you? or is it just more convenient on a console?

it's likely you'll need a crack, trial versions tend to put size limits or time limits or weird stuff like watermarks or file format restrictions

Hey so I am wondering if there is anyone here who knows VBulletin and MySQL really well.

Well enough to provide me with what I can expect upgrading MySQL Community from 5.0.26 to 5.0.67 so I can inevitably upgrade to the latest 5.1.30.

I suck at MySQL and I don't want to destroy 5 years worth of posts.

Also I need to start Archiving as the single database that stores all our info is now pretty fricken big.

According to Google, all the time. You just have to burn the right files onto the disc.

I'm looking at rebuilding a new PC now that parts are so cheap. However, I don't really know what to look for in a CPU. I currently use an Intel Core 2 Duo @ 2.6 gHz. I use my PC for gaming, making music, and for graphic design, so I don't know if say, a quad core @ 2.3 gHz would be a better upgrade than a dual core @ 3.1 gHz. I also don't understand hyper transports, caches. Basically any CPU lingo.

IgniteYourAvail

Not many games out rigt now utilize all 4 cores of a quad, so it's not imperative to have. However, by using a quadcore, you're effectively future-proofing the machine for when support for 4 cores starts to gain popularity. So, it's pretty much how much you want to spend.

It's not safe to have me tooling around inside of a computer if anyone wants it to continue working after I've put it back together, and I cringe at the thought of paying someone to install the drive for me, which is why I'm considering an external.

you can find much cpu discussion, pro and con, quad and dual, and plenty of cpu "lingo" and how to understand it in this thread:

It's pretty simple stuff man. Installing a drive is probably the easiest thing to do second to installing ram. There's lots of resources available too for walkthroughs online.

Well I just bought a new SATA drive to replace my old dying one. I get it hooked up, install it, format it, everything is working fine. I restart my PC, and suddenly it won't boot. I get to the mobo screen graphic, then it just goes to a black screen with one flashing underscore and it sits there. I unplug the new drive, my PC boots fine. I hate computers.

And I can't even get to the BIOS with the drive active.

Well internal drives are a hell of a lot cheaper, and maybe if I had a step-by-step tutorial I could do it, but I'm just personally terrified of destroying a $600 machine.

nah really all you have to do is take the big white plastic plug dangling free inside your machine (or the plug thats already in your current dvd player) and plug it tinto the new one and do the same for the little red(?) power plug coming from the big tanky power supply

just open the case pop out the cover thats covering the 2nd cd drive tray (unlesss your swaping with the oldone then dont do this) slide it in secure it with screws or pull the lever that hold it (just look at how the one thats in there is secured) connect the cables to the back and your set

There are extensions you can get, which will apparently make the computer appear to use 4gbs, but it's similar to the already available paging file - i.e. just use hdd.

A computer savvy guy at my work said something about it taking out your video card's memory or something. Mine has 512, so 512 plus the 3328 would be around 3800 which is close enough to 4 gigs for me.

Chu

There are 2^32 available addresses on 32-bit. - Wait for beso, or someone who doesn't have a 5 second memory and can use the correct terminology.

I think it comes out as roughly 3.4gb.

64-bit is, obviously, 2^64 which is a ridiculously large number.

When iTunes is open, check out the App Store for free/paid apps. Some of the games/apps are free, some cost money, but most of them are less than $10 and are fun and worth it. Sometimes, the games/apps get their price reduced to 99c. Also, some have a "Lite" version.

As for normal operation, just play around with it. Get a feel for how it works with the accelerometer and everything. Very fun device.

I would definitely buy some screen protectors and possibly a case for it.

Unless you have, like, razorblade fingertips you can use it without damaging it. But as I said, at least buy screen protectors for it to prevent minor scratches. Costs a few dollars for several protectors and are much easier to replace than the screen itself.

Several of the games I have are worth buying and are of good quality (for gameplay and graphics). You can always jailbreak it, I guess, but I'd rather not mine.

well i got it up and running and connected to the internet and all. its an impressive piece of tech, thats for sure. more then i expected, even. i downloaded a couple of games (Bejeweled and Tetris) and they look and play good. gonna get a stylus for it, too. itunes seems user friendly, also.

You are correct ipods don't have stop buttons, just pause. You pause it and leave it idol for a few minutes, and thats how it turns off. As for docks, I have this one and know other people who have it and it works pretty well.

well i got it up and running and connected to the internet and all. its an impressive piece of tech, thats for sure. more then i expected, even. i downloaded a couple of games (Bejeweled and Tetris) and they look and play good. gonna get a stylus for it, too. itunes seems user friendly, also.

do you have a "listening station" for it or w/e its called? for your home? if so what kind? i would like to spend under $100 but still want good sound i can move room to room

also, i notice their is no "Stop" for music playback. is this correct? one last thing....can it zoom web pages? i've looked at the player and googled but don't see a function for it

oh, and youtube on this thing is really cool :)

thanks a bunch

A stylus won't work. Like laptop touchpads, it works because of body heat. I've tried working the screen through a glove, and it didn't react.

Shell has iPod speakers, but they don't work with the Touch. If you get one, make sure it says it works with the Touch.

There isn't a Stop button. Just pause.

To zoom in a webpage, you can either double-tap the screen or "pinch" the screen. To zoom in, take your thumb and forefinger (together), and touch the screen then spread them apart. And to zoom out, do the opposite.

Watch this to get an idea of how to work some of the functions: http://www.apple.com/ipodtouch/guidedtour/

What games do you have (other than Tetris and Bejeweled)?

I have Bejeweled, Blackjack, Bugdom 2, Centipede (hell yeah Atari classic  ), Collapse! Chaos, Cro-Mag Rally, Enigmo, Hero of Sparta, Labyrinth, Solitaire, Tetris, and Toybot Diaries entries 1, 2, and 3.

JohnXDoe
02-04-2009, 06:00 AM
i only have Tetris and Bejeweled for now but will get more no doubt. Centipede sounds good. always liked that game. if it works well on the itouch its prolly a go. some card games for sure. simple ones like Blackjack. just things to kill time during slow periods at work

i have a question about the internet. now, i'm connected at home, but its my understanding that "mobile broadband" isn't available for the itouch. its impossible, IOW. but can i connect from a "hot spot," i guess its called? or like at Starbucks or w/e? or a motel, airport, office building, etc? i mean i can connect wherever there is an "open" network, right? or any available network i have a password to. correct?

Pariah
02-04-2009, 06:05 AM
Yeah. It can find connections and automatically connect to them.

I definitely recommend Hero of Sparta. Graphics are awesome, and the gameplay is quite good. And Enigmo is a challenging puzzle game, reminds me of Lemmings.

i hope you revisit this thread as i have one more question. for you or someone else who can answer. i have tried google and have come up empty for the most part

i noticed after transferring my music to the ipod all songs on certain albums are placed in alphabetical order rather then proper track sequence? on itunes they are placed properly, just as they are on the original CD. but on the ipod the are listed and play in alphabetical order. which bothers me. and i don't see a way of changing it. most of my albums are fine, nothing changed. but on more then a few albums songs are listed and play in alphabetical order?

any ideas about this and how to correct it?

Sounds like the ID3 tags are wrong in some, or in a format that is not recognised by itunes so it defaults. AFAIK there's a program you can download designed to fix this, but I can't recall the name sorry. Someone else may.

What sorts of things are you going to be doing with said pc?
i think group zebra poses a good question. and i won't even say "build your own" bcuz if thats what you were going to do, well, you'd be doing it

you aren't going to "game" on this "gaming computer" with the video card included. not even close. unless running really old games. if you want to upgrade the card so it can run ANY newer game you will have to upgrade the PSU, too. as upon close inspection the PSU has just 14amps on each 12v rail. that will barely get the job done for most adequate gaming cards. and its also just 400w. so...this is not a "gamer" computer by any stretch of the imagination as its name implies

the mobo has just two slots for memory. i don't like that it should have four imo. two slots says "low end" mobo. not that four would necessarily mean better quality, but it would mean something...more

the main attraction of this unit is its processor, which is an AMD dual core based on their Phenom core processors. its energy efficient and peepy enough, but no powerhouse by any stretch of the imagination. it would be great for basic computing and stuff, and it would play games fine with a decent video card

another attraction is the 64bit OS. idk much or anything about 64 bit computing, but many like it. however that is something (the OS) you can upgrade to anytime you might like

imo this is not a good value, even for basic needs. it will suit basic needs fine, but nothing more. if basic needs are all you have look to a Dell or HP tbh. or just something else, period. for $500 deals are to be found. if you want to play games and what not, immediate upgrades are in order. or at least down the line when the time comes

imho its over priced and limited in its upgrade path by just two slots for memory. its a basic box with a 64bit OS. for the same price or a little more you could do somewhat better. if "basics" and a 64bit OS are all you need, well, it is what it is for $500 :/

i'll brb with some other choices

much better overall value

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883103190

still only two slots for RAM but thats neither here nor there. 180 gigs less HD space, but you can worry about that if you ever need more space. and HD's are pretty cheap these days. no vid card and only a 250w PSU, but the vid card in the other computer is fairly useless anyway and the 400w psu is useless if you ever want to upgrade

this computer has a quad core processor. not the best or fastest, but it will get the job done well. overall better value and purchase at $489 for basic computing needs imo

for gaming the dual core AMD in the computer you linked isn't so bad. but nor is the q8200. neither is a great overclocker really, but you won't be doing that on the mobo's included, anyway. the AMD is clocked higher, but that means nothing as its a different chip design

lets put it this way...the AMD chip (7750) can be had for $80 atm at newegg. the q8200 is $170. so, there 'ya go...

also this at $500 is a much better value then the AMD. much. and similar in every way so far as vid card and psu are concerned

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883227131

brb with some box maker deals if i can find some :)

JohnXDoe
02-14-2009, 01:43 AM
well crap if you are NEVER going to overclock (something those low buck mobo's on the linked above won't do well anyway) Dell has these with a good intel dual core (E7400) for $450 atm or quad (q6600) for $20 more

http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?oc=dddoob1&c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&kc=features~desktops_great_deals

they come with 500 gigs on the HD, 4 gigs RAM, 64 bit OS, basic vid card (ATI 3450) and of course one year warranty and tech support. you can add a media card reader for $20 more, and a wireless card for $30 more. so thats around or about $500 right there

upgrade for gaming in the future? all i can say is i have a Dell Ispirion and i changed the psu and vid card myself, no problem. i have an 8800GT and 500w antec in mine. plays Crysis fine and everything else. Left4Dead is spectacular :D

don't know if you void any or all of the warranty if you upgrade the PSU in the first year, but i don't think so. if so meh, but i upgraded mine no prob

i won't even bother posting other box maker comps because thats gonna be as good as it gets for around $500 :/

JohnXDoe
02-14-2009, 03:47 AM
yeah its not a bad box unit. but if you want mega expandability you always have to build your own or get a higher priced "pre built"

IOW you will never be able to put more then a combination of two dvd drives and two HD's in this, your internal HD space may be limited to 750mb's (unless Dell updates the bios for more), and you'll never swap the case, add more fans (although you can change them. including the cpu fan / heatsink), or add a HUGE graphics card (in physical size, although a dual slot card will fit if the pci slot below it is empty)

but those other "custom" $500 computers from newegg are pretty limited, too. and it doesn't sound like you're very interested in spending more money or building one or w/e. otherwise you wouldn't be asking about $500 computers

its actually a pretty good deal if you aren't the type to tinker and tamper with a computer. constantly upgrading and such. oh, and you won't ever use a non Dell OS with it, either. IOW hang onto the OS disc it comes with, because you can't use a regular "non Dell" copy of Windows with a Dell comp. i'm pretty sure you can "upgrade" to a newer edition of Windows after a bios update (Windows 7, for instance) but it will have to be a Dell edition

oh man 2002. if you've had a chance to work on a newer one to any extent you know the difference is like night and day. if not you'll be very pleasantly surprised

either way the capabilities of the new ones, dual core, quad, etc are pretty impressive for the home user. i went from a p4 2.8 (2004) to a mid range AMD dual core unit and am still like "damn!" after over a year of use

still very happy with it :D

alright ... so here's the deal. I recently reformatted my computer since my audio was messed up --- I could hear audio using media players such as vlc, windows media player, i-tunes, etc., but I couldn't get audio watching youtube videos or other flash sites.

I had installed all the recommended audio drivers for my mobo (which has an onboard sound card) ... but it didn't work.

That said, I had reformatted my computer and reinstalled Windows XP.

Now, NO AUDIO AT ALL! :upset:

I've installed the Realtek AC97 audio driver which is the driver that was initially on my computer when I first got it, but that didn't work.

I then installed the latest version of the aforementioned driver, but to no avail.

Does anyone here know what else there is that I can do? I absolutely need to be able to play audio on my computer.

I know ... I could go buy a new one, but I don't do gaming anymore, so it's not exactly necessary to have the most up-to-date beast machine. The machine I have now suffices nicely for running my graphics programs (though I could definitely do for a little more RAM).

And to Shadows Within .... by I/O's, I'm assuming you mean the physical connections? If so, then they're all set properly. And my soundcard is an onboard feature of my motherboard, and the only thing I've done with it is play vlc and itunes, and run my PODxt through my computer using the microphone jack. no no, I/O means Input/Output meaning what Windows recognizes as your default input (probably your POD) and your output is your speakers. you probably blew your soundcard because you really cant plug in an external soundcard into an internal one (unless it is a high end one like a protools card or something of the sort., that POD acts as a external sound card much like my M-Audio Firewire 410 and i think it messes it up because it's going from 1/4 jack to a headphone jack. i blew out my 3 internal cards in my old computer by plugging my Synth directly into my sound card with a 1/4 inch-to-headphone converter.

I bought this USB A[male] to A[male] cable off ebay [from LOL-Kong] with the intention of linking my electric drum kit and my laptop directly [rather than using flash memory to transfer data], but am aprehensive to plug it in straight away as technically they're both computers. Is there going to be any issues with this? Will this cable work or do I need a specialist data-transfer type cable?

Benzum
03-09-2009, 04:36 PM
If you want to record your electric drum kit just get a low latency audio interface and use the host software to manipulate your current rig. As long as the DAW registers your signal there really is no problem?

Aaron
03-09-2009, 06:30 PM
That's my problem; I'm having issues with my audio interface and wanted a purely digital way to get around the issues [signal just isn't high enough going kit-brain > component cable > inteface to USB].

Benzum
03-10-2009, 05:11 AM
I don't know if that's at all possible. Maybe try putting the signal from the kit through a guitar amp purely as a temporary solution, that's bound to boost it. I know this isn't exactly what you want to hear but it might just be easier to get a new or fix your current audio interface. I know how annoying this stuff can be.

Still can't really turn anything up it's a dell and generic and I've found the motherboard for sale on ebay other than that it's just problem shooting in forums and the such...

christsimpson

google the exact Dell model number, and go to Dell's sites and look at the motherboard info. or you can call Dell and they will tell you what chipset it supports.

Cramboli
03-16-2009, 04:28 AM
I can tell you how that call would go
Dell: Is your computer on?
Me: Yes
Dell: Crap, um hold on can I call you back
Yeah I did that and it's trying to give me support for some old *** dell tower
I'm really starting to hate them because when I got this comp back in fall they didn't have the option to upgrade the processor so I was stuck at getting 2.1ghz and now they have options for it... Like the same thing with my fiancee's mini9 only being able to get 1g ram...

oh I thought you meant like the overall comp model my bad but yeah I'll do that like when they oping it's like 6:35 AM here and they usually don't answer until like 8ish thanks for the help and putting up with my bs I'm just really pissed at dell with the fact that they control what you can get... But I hate HP's and I had an acer which crapped the bed because it couldn't handle my awesome...

wait what doesn't it say what model it is? isn't here a sticker somewhere? do you have the manuals? if you don't know what model it is, you probably need to get to some store that can tell you.

Cramboli
03-16-2009, 04:46 AM
it tells me the model PP31L for the comp but when I type it in the dell search bar it takes me to some ancient tower and I was told that just looking at the bottom of the motherboard would tell me put there so many of those dumbass dell labeling stickers you can't tell you can't remove it from it chassis without force None of the manuals or books tell you about the motherboard if you type it in the search bar it gives you everything but
I even have the system in my account and it really tells you everything down to the screws what's in there but it doesn't mention the mother board I mean unless I looked over it...

uh they are all programming languages. and all of those languages you post are extremely different. C is a low-level language, C++ is object-based, Perl is high-level and interpreted, and Python is also high-level and interpreted as well as very simplistic.

It will reduce itself accordingly, but say after like 20 minutes, it will just immediantly drop from say, the 97% power it said it had remaining to like 6% power and will tell me I have like 8 minutes left (and it means it cause it will shut itself off).

What gives?

Perl and Python are interpreted while C and C++ are compiled. that is the only difference. You can do the same things with each. Interpreted languages are easier to use but are slower than compiled languages.

C is high level but not as high as Java. Assembly language is low level.

ok so i build a new comp, i bought a motherboard that can support up to 8 gigs of ram, i have a 32 bit system and iu purchased 4 gigs of ram, but when i installed the ram (dual channel enabled) but when i turn on my comp and go to system information it says im only running 2.5 gigs of ram?? i got a tool that tells you if you have dual channel supported and it says all 4 gigs are enabled, i had almost the save vid card before running 512 mb or ram, and on vista it said i was running 3.5 gigs of ram even with my video card....so it's not that.

oh and i have XP pro with SP3.

EDIT: also my new vid card said it can only run with a power supply of 400w or up, if i got a second vid card and ran it in SLI mode would i need a bigger power supply than my 500w or does it not matter?

IgniteYourAvail
03-20-2009, 10:05 AM
You need to install a 64 bit operating system in order for it to see 4 gigs of RAM or more.

For your graphics card issue, get the biggest power supply you can for SLI'ing. You should also look into getting exterior cooling solutions, those things can run hot.

You can recompile Linux and hack Windows 32-bit versions in order for it to identify >4 gigs of ram. It involves messing around with PAE extensions and a bunch of other jazz I have no idea how to do.

While some people say the 8800 GT's are just as reliable as any other card, I've heard from other places that they have a higher than normal failure rate, most relating to heating issues. So I'd look into that. If possible, of course, try hooking up to another monitor just in case.

What brand is it? If it's under warranty just send it in and have them check it out.

Otherwise, no way to verify it's the card unless you have either an integrated graphics system on the mobo or buy a new one and replace it and see, but of course that would only narrow it to the card or the slot on the mobo still. There's probably some software out there somewhere...but if you can't see that's not much use =|

Mister_Che
04-06-2009, 04:36 PM
So it could be the slot also? Hmm. I know it's not the monitor. Whenever I shut down the computer, the monitor will stay on for a second, then the prompt (No Signal) will appear. The prompt isn't discolored so that leads me to believe it's not the monitor.

If it's a heat issue, it could be dust right? I should check the insides and see if it's dusty?

I'm going to try and remove the GT later and use the integrated graphics card and see if that fixes it. Thanks for the input guys, it's greatly appreciated.

Permanent Solution
04-06-2009, 07:32 PM
I'm just thinking of it like an engineering problem. If it's not the monitor, the problem can be anywhere from the cable all the way to the CPU. That's the whole system, and it's hard to isolate where it is without extensive testing. But trying the integrated would be a good step and isolate it fairly well. If integrated works it's probably the card...the slot probably works if the mobo does. Probably.

Checking for dust would be good too, yes.

my guess is you have a shitload of hidden system files that dont come up when you select all but are included when you just look at the drives properties

have you tried resetting CMOS?

ok you prolly know more about this then i do. but i had a similar prob to yours and thats what i did and it worked. i had to do a little work around BIOS afterward to make sure my settings were correct, but it did boot fine after the reset

just google "resetting CMOS"

apparently all mobos have a battery on them (lithium of some sort) that keeps the mobo in low power mode or somethin' and makes it remember stuff. this can also cause trouble. some mobos have a switch or lever you activate to reset CMOS, others make it simple to pop out the battery. some not so simple. mine was not so simple, but i popped it out and an hour later popped it back in and my computer went straight to bios and straight to boot up

barring any other hardware / software problem this might work. sorry i can't be of more help, but thats just my experience. lots of info on google about this, 'tho

EDIT: oh, i think the switch / lever method of resetting is called a CMOS "jumper." so just a heads up

it sounds like Windows Explorer might be crashing. not to be confused with Internet Explorer, of course

this sometimes happens to me...although i get a pop up that says "Windows Explorer Has Stopped Working" with a couple of options. i choose to let it "restart" (Explorer, not the computer) and everything comes back in a few seconds

i would suggest checking your settings in control panel....and running a virus scan or two. spyware, also. just in case. defrag the HD, too. if you haven't done so yet. clean out the temp files, registry, all that stuff

otherwise it might just be buggy :/

I'm currently using a TV as my monitor. It's hooked up using a VGA cable and works fine except for when I try to run it a 800x600 resolution. Normally this wouldn't bother me but I'm trying to play some older game that only run on 800x600 and to run them I have to plug in an older monitor.

Any reason my current set-up won't allow me to run 800x600?

I know it sounds simple, but your TV might not support that resolution. I know my monitor back home will cut itself out at some random resolutions because it doesn't support them.

Aye that's what I figured, unfortunately. :(

edit: yep, definitely my TV. I tried it on my buddies 32" and it worked perfectly. Ah well, gives me an excuse to buy a new one :D

Any suggestions for a 32"-42" TV for under $1000*?

*For the TV. I need to budget the rest for warranties, cables, stands, ext.

Due to Norton being ****, I'm having to copy EVERYTHING onto an external hard drive and reset the computer to factory settings.
My main concern is regarding iTunes. I'm the only one in the family who uses it, so it's gonna be a pain to:

1. Add everything I have onto it
2. Put the right artwork, etc, onto it
3. "Edit" the songs to get rid of annoying interludes, hidden tracks, etc

I've just learned that, apparently, when I reset the computer and download iTunes I can simply plug my iPod in and transfer everything over.

1. Is this true?
2. If it is true, will everything on the iPod be transfereed to iTunes
3. If not, what can I do to get rid of over 2 days hassle?

I don't know about recently, but there have been millions of horror stories involving someone plugging in a full iPod into a new copy of iTunes and having it wipe the entire iPod. The best thing to do is use a third-party iPod manager first (floola, winamp plugin, etc) and move the songs manually to your desired location.

Only problem I had with connecting my iPod to a new copy of iTunes was it erasing my apps, but I just redownloaded them without any problem.

I remember someone from here put all their music on their iPod, then decided to delete it from their computer to make space. They connected their iPod again and lost everything.

Well, yesterday, I followed a help section on the Apple site, which suggested consolidating my library into one folder and putting that folder onto my iPod. Apparnetly, I should be able to transfer it all onto the new iTunes.

No biggie if it gets wiped, I've still got all the music on the computer, just this saves a ****load of hassle

Hey dudes, so I'm using a pretty much new desktop and just recently like within the last two days or so, the tower has been humming a lot louder than normal. Almost like a loud buzzing. It doesn't bother me too much, but it's just that it's verrry noticeably louder and nastier sounding, which makes me think I either use it too much or I did something to cause it. I did download some torrents and such, but my anti-virus doesn't see any viruses when I scan. Any idea on why this is happening? thanks :]

usually noise is hardware.... You might wanna crack it open and see if theres a wire buzzing on a fan blade or something along those lines.

check fans, then unlpug devices to isolate where there noise is coming from.

sounds like an xbox 360

anyway, it is probably something to do with a fan being loose or faulty in some way causing a vibration. if its bussing through the speakers then it could be a connection problem.

software or content never cause hardware issues

it was crackling a little through the headphones too the other day, but mostly it's just buzzing and vibrating a lot. but it's definitely just the fan or loose wiring or something, and not anything caused by the actual use of the computer?

could be a bad PS, also. as others have said, open it up and try to isolate where the sound is coming from. sounds like hardware, of course. so it prolly is. its just a matter of determining whether its a more practical component (PS, Fan, etc) or something more involved such as sound card / mobo issues. i'm thinking PS. but...i always think that when something is buzzing and humming :p

Whenever I try to use my webcam in my browser, it'll encounter an error and need to shut down. like capturing my webcam via youtube, facebook, meebo, justin.tv etc. it works in im based clients like sype and aim though.

I have a logitech quick cam pro 9000.

so far i've tried

updating/reinstalling flash
updating java
updating webcam (no updates were available)
reinstalling webcam
tried firefox and ie

when i asked on the logitech forums/support they told me to contact adobe as it is a flash issue. well, adobe told me it's a logitech issue so i'm not gonna get any help there. lol

anyone else have any troubles like this? when i searched google there seemed to be a lot of people having the same problem, but there was never a solution.

Yo guys , In the last week My power supply busted, SO i got a new one . But the thing is that my new power supply is rated at 300W and the old one was rated at 250W. I asked the shop dude if it will work and he said yea. But now My PC restarts(sometimes Shuts down) every now and then randomly.

I just want to know if It is the power rating on the power supply or possibly some other reason .

I got a System that is pretty old (3 years).

JohnXDoe3
05-03-2009, 06:52 AM
what kind of PS? brand and model?

its not inconceivable the supply might be bad. even though its new. i'm assuming everything is hooked up securely. and just because its 300w doesn't mean its better then the 250w. a good quality 250w supply > a poor quality 300w anyday

but i don't know what the case it. chances are, yeah, if it wasn't doing this b4 you changed the supply then its related to the swap. how did the old one fail?

post your pc specs and PS info / specs and that would help most users give an opinion

well Its a S-TEK Model ST-772002.

My previous one was A-Open ATX 250 GLU

I specifically saked the guy for one that can work with My PC (I took it there).

The thing is that it may also be my Power Board that could be faulty

JohnXDoe3
05-03-2009, 08:04 AM
hm

well i googled that and nothing really comes up. must be a generic OEM maker. which is fine, i just don't know if they make good PS's.

if you have a basic system it should have enough power for it. or it could be your mobo (i'm thinking thats what you mean by Power Board). from what i understand, PS's are the things which usually fail first...and take other components with them. not the other way around. however i'm no expert i just guess around. i think a bad component can affect power stability? but idk how that works

w/e the case it sounds like a power problem, yeah. the OS is not crashing and everything is hooked up and plugged in right. when the computer "shuts down" from this does it "sign off" or just lose all power? IOW if you are working on something you lose your work, right? it just goes dead. or if it "restarts" it does so after losing all power

sounds very PS like to me. you can always see if you can "borrow" one from a shop or w/e (get a dirt cheap used one, maybe? ) and throw it in and see what happens. i know it seems a waste, but it pays to have two, anyway. that way you can trouble shoot like this. if another supply works with no probs...its definitely the supply. so you can then rule that out

must be some way to "test" the supply, too. but idk

250w-300w sounds low. you have a real basic system?

3 years is hardly old.

Most PSUs are fairly versatile, and cheaping out on PSU is never good.

In conclusion, get a better PSU.

Alright so a new problem...yay

Now Internet Explorer seems shady. Every now and then, it will just close with no error messages or anything; just take me back to my desktop. It also freezes up on some other forums when I login and check the box "remember me" (if I don't click "remember me", it won't close). When using Megaupload, I can't get any downloads to go through, and if I click "Regular Download" again, it closes. Sometimes when I hit "Log Out" on Facebook it closes everything too. I googled it, and a lot of the answers were the same as to what I did earlier (run those two anti-spyare/malware/virus programs I used).

I've tried running "Internet Explorer (No Add-Ons)" and it's a little bit better, but it will still close (just less frequently).

My computer came with the hard drive partitioned into two drives, one main one (C) and a smaller one for backup (D). Since I back up on an external hard drive, I haven't saved anything onto D, but My Computer shows that 6gB are being used (although there's nothing there when I open the D folder).

So, can I safely format that partition to free up the space without wiping my C partition as well, or will I screw my computer up totally?

So, I'm looking to upgrade my computer and I figured I'd go with a 64-bit quad-core processor and 8 GB of RAM, that way I'm technologically compatible for the next 4 years or so.

I hate Vista. I'm trying to make the switch to Linux as I run Debian at work and I prefer it to Windows in just about every way imaginable. There are only a couple programs I'm concerned about using that are, to my knowledge, windows exclusive. Everything else I'd make the open-source switch (Photoshop to GIMP, etc.).

That brings me to my second question, are there any decent multi-track audio recording programs for linux? Right now I just use Adobe audition, and I'm quite content with it, but if I make the switch and it's not compatible, I'd like to find something else.

Thanks for the help so far, y'all.

Interestingly enough, WINEx64 supports and runs 16bit DOS applications (64bit Windows won't run 16bit DOS, or even Windows applications), in theory you could run x64 Linux and run all your Windows programs fine. (I don't use WINE myself, I can't comment on how well it works).

so I'm trying to reinstall iTunes cause it's not recognizing my iPod (it charges, but it won't appear in iTunes). So first, I tried to stop the service or whatever by going to My Computer (right-click) > Manage > Services and Applications > Services > iPod Service > Stop.

When I do this, it starts, but then I get an error message that says something like "Cannot stop service. Make sure you are verified to stop this service".

So then I just tried to flat-out uninstall without stopping the service manually first, and I got the same message right at the beginning of the uninstallation process.

Next up, I tried just downloading the latest version of iTunes and installing it...but near the end of the installation, guess what, I got the same error message.

Any tips/suggestions here?
